That wasn't the reason I went, though. I went because at that age, I thought it was cool to ride the free white-painted bus on Sunday mornings.

Now many years have passed, and I am an atheist, having given up on the hocus-pocus of any religion. I came to that point somewhere in my second tour in Viet Nam. That doesn't mean that I look down or despise those who choose to believe in that mumbo-jumbo, just that I don't. Religious people do not scare me nor do I pity them.

I do study the Bible, but only in the twin contexts of trying to understand ancient history and to garner any lessons that might be in it. I look at the Bible as a history book, of some question as to its accuracy, but no better, no worse than any other produced at the time.

If you are talking about religion, then I would like you to try to remember when you learned some neat thing like riding a bike, or playing a musical instrument. Remember that feeling of self-satisfaction and joy at being able to do or know something new? That is exactly how I felt when I abandoned my attempts to make sense out of the spiritual world. It was liberating and filled me with a sense of joy. So I wouldn't call it sad. I never really bought the line that religion preaches and still don't. But I never really lost anything. I just gave up trying to find something that was obviously not there.

It is mystifying that anybody acknowledges this clown. Nana, what are you thinking?
