War/Bush Protest Album Available for Listening Online...
[UPDATE] EXCLUSIVE: 'LET'S IMPEACH THE PRESIDENT' Single Version Now Streaming Here...

Neil Young's new protest album, Livining With War, which includes "Let's Impeach the President" and other anti-war/anti-Bush tunes, is now released for listening online at NeilYoung.com.

It's also available, if you have any problem streaming from Young's site, at Justice Through Music (their version is handy, since it also allows you to pause listening, if needed.)

Jim Cirile provided an exclusive early preview of the album for The BRAD BLOG last weekend. Feel free to leave us your review here in comments!

UPDATE: "LET'S IMPEACH THE PRESIDENT" ONLINE HERE
Though we recommend listening the whole album, as you're required to do on the Neil Young site, etc. (we've now done so twice and the whole thing kicks ass), here is a streaming version of "Let's Impeach the President" only...

"Let's Impeach the President" in Streaming Flash format...

Care to sing along?

Let's impeach the president for lying
And leading our country into war
Abusing all the power that we gave him
And shipping all our money out the door
He's the man who hired all the criminals
The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors
And bend the facts to fit with their new stories
Of why we have to send our men to war...

Complete lyrics here...

Yes, Neil's a patriot. Honestly, I thought, oh, this is going to be OK, but not much after the first two songs, but he hits his stride with "The Restless Consumer" - Don't need no more lies tying in with the war - that's good. (And the thing starts to rock then, too. Unsubtle, straight on protest rock - what Neil's good at.)

I like "back in the days of shock and awe, back in the days of mission accomplished".

A little homage to Bob Dylan - and, so, protest songs, in "Flags of Freedom"...you know, "Chimes of Freedom"

Who couldn't like "Let's Impeach the President" --- hope it gets a lot of play.

Ok now, let's see the neocon apologists put out a good cd. The militarists gave the peaceniks such a run for the money in the Nixonian era. :-)

Thank you Brad . Thank you Neil. The songs are great but leave me with a heavy heart. It's a reminder of the Vietnam days and meeting guys who came here to avoid the draft. I never EVER dreamed that I would see this happen again in my life time.

The drumming is great ...

I thought the entire CD was beyond exceptional. The Restless Consumer brought tears to my eyes. Good to hear somoene singing some truth for a change. Maybe now I can see a little further. Thanks Neil for the spontaneity. It is genuine and full of heart...I could hear it in the drumming as well. You're a true patriot of the people.

I can't listen to the stream - dialup - so I can't wait for the CD. Those '60's protest songs have stayed with me, achingly, and it certainly is time for some new ones! Thank you, Neil Young...and thanks, Brad, for keeping abreast of this and keeping us informed.

To better understand the spontaneity of Neil Young's writing, you can watch Neil himself explain his songwriting process in an excerpt from his SXSW keynote conversation at SXSW site.
Interestingly enough, I watched the keynote in its entirety yesterday, which included an introduction from SXSW's Roland Swenson. Roland spoke about the environment and impact of Neil's song "Ohio" about the Kent State massacre. How it galvanized so many in the nation, and people said, "Enough!". Years after Neil said "It's still hard to believe I had to write this song".
Roland ended the intro by saying, "Mr. Young, if you can hear me...we need a new song!" Sounds like a call to action to me, and if it influenced Neil in the least, I am grateful.

I have a dream.

It is a dream where thousands upon thousands of Americans surround the White House and sing this song as loud as they can.

Broadcast live --- primetime.

Upons seeing this spontaneous protest, millions upon millions take action.

It's kind of like that moment where everyone gets out of their cars in that R.E.M. video.

Just want to add to my #3 - I thought it was good, but it's even better than I thought. Now that I'm taking a second listening (without buffering:-) it really clicked. They really are terrific songs - music and lyrics equally and complenting each other.

Messages: No more lies; we can be something a lot different and a lot better; impeach the damn "president"

It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of a new protest album by a veteran like Neil Young, but this may really be a classic.

(Agree with Bill at #13 about "The Restless Consumer" - what a great, angry, necessary truthtelling - one terrific song.)

Yes, i've listened to it continuously since it first came up on the 'nets. This is a very good album, there is no doubt about it. Solid rock and roll a la Ragged Glory and Mirror Ball. Thoughtful lyricism a la Broken Arrow and Harvest Moon. The only thing I was somewhat disappointed by was the fact that there was no extended guitar meltdown solo as with "Southern Man", "Down By the River", etc. Otherwise his guitar is exceptional as always.

"Roger and out" (#9) is playing now is also very good.

Thanks Neil... this restless consumer will be very happy to go out and buy your new record!

Our "Burnin'Band" in Maine has been rockin' out doing protest songs for over 20 years now, and even written a couple ~all BEFORE it was "In" again.

One of our "classics" has always been a seguey where we do, a capela, "Find the Cost of Freedom"
followed by a STOMPIN' version of "OHIO".
I'll never forget how, a couple of years ago, a bunch of our Redneck Townies stomped out of the hall over that... even though we were playing a BENEFIT for one of their RELATIVE's medical expenses!
Yup, that's the types who voted Bush... TWICE!

What Neil said in his interview with CNN--"Red and blue or not black and white. We're all together. It's a record about unification."-- shows me that he's not trying to be the very thing we are all protesting. His gift for us all is a voice. The grunge has a way of transforming that illusion of hopelessness. It can't just be about us versus them. That's been going on since the beginning of time.

... Bill said on 4/30/2006 @ 7:35 pm PT...

Debbie--

I didn't yet see the keynote at SXSW but I found an interview by them with Neil regarding his creative process. Neil says, among other things, "When you're terrifed, you know you're on the right track." This was probably just slightly before Living With War. But, compare this to the "creativity" of Bush the deluded aggressor. At first we were in Afghanistan, now we are dumping billions into Iraq in a war without a noble cause. The difference here is that I don't think Bush's own fear sprung from his love of humanity. Being the opportunist he is, he used our fear to advance his vision of a cookie-cutter democracy. But even though things appear dark and dire it's not at all a hopeless situation. I feel that's part of what Neil's message is. Where there is no heart, there is lying, and calculated destruction based on trying to get what isn't ours. But the heart can change that nightmare into something that we can all live with, even those who are out deluding themselves with visions of war.

Good to hear Neil singing, "I take a holy vow to never kill again."

It's also good to hear Neil's LWW songs on a local radio station. I heard three of them so far. What a treat!

BTW, I'm actually new at posting on blogs. Seriously. As for #27, I'm thinking that maybe it's a lot of blah, blah for the small point I was trying to make. At any rate, I am interested in other comments. But, if it must end here, then so be it.

While the goals of the U.S. and the Philippines seem to be the same regarding elections --- fair and fraud-free, their methods are diametrically opposed. The Philippines is desperate to get away from paper ballots and automate their elections, and the U.S., having been there done that, is heading in the opposite direction.
