Isn't it time for a REAL President again?

Watching the debates over the last few weeks, it's occured to me how nice it'll be to once again have a real President of this country, instead of somebody who's playing "President".

This embarrassing passage from Ron Suskind's New York Times' Magazine article on Bush today sorta sums it all up. It's from a meeting in the Oval Office in December of 2002 where Bush was discussing "The Road Map for Peace in the Middle-East" with lawmakers. On the topic of which army could be trusted as peacekeepers by both Israelis and Palestinians, Hungarian born Holocaust survivor Congressman Tom Lantos, a Democrat, spoke up:

Lantos went on to describe for the president how the Swedish Army might be an ideal candidate to anchor a small peacekeeping force on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Sweden has a well-trained force of about 25,000. The president looked at him appraisingly, several people in the room recall.

''I don't know why you're talking about Sweden,'' Bush said. ''They're the neutral one. They don't have an army.''

Lantos paused, a little shocked, and offered a gentlemanly reply: ''Mr. President, you may have thought that I said Switzerland. They're the ones that are historically neutral, without an army.'' Then Lantos mentioned, in a gracious aside, that the Swiss do have a tough national guard to protect the country in the event of invasion.

Bush held to his view. ''No, no, it's Sweden that has no army.''

The room went silent, until someone changed the subject.

Vote November 2nd. Dear God, please vote! And take as many friends with you as you can. Please?

My sister...and her dormmates...are voting absentee this week for Kerry...in Florida.

They don't show up in the polls. They're not asked to take polls. Yet they are all voting just the same. Bush's lead averages to about three or four votes when likely voters are sampled. Their methodology almost ALWAYS oversamples Republicans, so we're in for a bumpy ride when people actually vote.

There could be a lot of surprises. The best one would be if Nader became sane again and endorsed Kerry.

It's been said that Switzerland doesn't have an army; Switzerland *IS* an army... which consists of 350,000+ able-bodied men between about 20 and 50 on reserve. They're quite nicely equipped to defend their storied neutrality.

Now I'm going to go play with my Swedish Army Knife. Bork bork bork.

i think Lantos can thank his lucky stars Bush didn't begin a long discourse about the differences between Italian and Swedish meatballs (no, this last was not a shot at Berlusconi) or why Ikea is like Target with fancy letters or the advantage of homemade gravlax over commercially produced...

Speaking of graves (which is where gravlax gets its name) i guess we can blame Lantos for the failured in Palestine. You know if he hadn't corrected Mr. Bush the latter may have been able to put together some kind of peacekeeping force.

Sweet day in the morning, that has to be one of the saddest things I have ever read.

I mean, this is the country that captured a Soviet sub in it's national waters in the 80s. While his dad was Vice-President! You think he may have heard something about it.

It's depressing to read about the basic lack of intelligence this man has. And to realize that close to 50% of this country's voters think he's done well enough to go another four years.

I think bush should get a life time job, in prison.
The asswipe has done nothing good for my country,
and he has devided this country like never before.
I have been on this planet for 63 years, and I
really worry about this idiot. Not because of his
smarts, but because of his stupidity. He feels for no one, as far as our military goes, and the working people. His idea is simply Fuck Em. Well, come nov.
2nd, lets all say the same to him and and bunch of
jerks. VOTE, and make sure it counts....

VotersUnite.org's Daily Voting News 'Daily Voting News'
for July 2-3, 2009

by Ellen Theisen

Co-Editors: Dave Klein and John Washburn

While the goals of the U.S. and the Philippines seem to be the same regarding elections --- fair and fraud-free, their methods are diametrically opposed. The Philippines is desperate to get away from paper ballots and automate their elections, and the U.S., having been there done that, is heading in the opposite direction.

Happy Independence Day! We're taking the weekend off....
