Juan Cole gets it right in his highly recommend piece today pointing out exactly why and how the MSM's required 15% profit margin has killed the entire industry and is bringing the rest of the country down with it. It's America (and the rest of the world!) which suffers from the corporate media delinquency, of course, as profit has replaced the public service that once was "the news".

Back in the day, news was always a loss-leader. It wasn't meant to make money, but to perform a public service. Back in the day, while CBS lost money with their extraordinary news gathering operation, Bill Paley was proud of that jewel in the "tiffany network's" crown. In America 2005, however, losing money for the good of the nation will not be tolerated. And those of us who understand that it's about issues and public safety and governmental responsible will be branded as America Haters in the process.

As Cole smartly puts it, "We don't care."

Read the whole piece if you can. It closes with this money quote...

And this difference, my friends, accounts for why bloggers get vilified. Journalists can be switched to another story, or fired, or their stories can be buried on page 36. We can't be fired. So if Martin Peretz doesn't like what we have to say, he will publish a hatchet job on us in The New Republic, seeking to make us taboo. If you can't shut people up, and you really don't want their voices heard, then all you can do is try to persuade others not to listen to them or give them a platform. The easiest way to do this is to falsely accuse them of racism or Communism some other character flaw unacceptable to polite society. Because of the distributed character of blogging "computing," however, such tactics are probably doomed to fail.

We are not the mainstream media, and we are here. Get used to it.

Indeed.

Second Time in a Week.
Is the tide finally turning?

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win"
- Mahatma Gandhi

If this Sunday article from Washington Post is any indication, it seems we're now somewhere between that "laugh at you" phase and that "fight you" phase. Which I choose to see as continuing good news...since we're heading straight towards that "then you win" phase in the bargain.

The piece headlined "Vote Fraud Theorists Battle Over Plausibility" from WaPo's Terry M. Neal is, at least, a step in the right direction. The issues are finally being discussed on no matter which page in the mainstreamest of the Mainstream Media.

With that, however, comes the usual expected imbalance in the bargain. The WaPo article discusses the recent scientific report from U.S. Count Votes which debunks the notion that the Exit Polls were wrong (as Bush Supporters, Republicans, and even the Exit Polling company would like you to believe) by explaining that the odds are several millions to one that the Exit Polls could say one thing in virtually all of the swing states, only to wildly change --- and in only one direction, Bush's --- at the last minute to give Bush a "victory" in the final Voting Results.

In covering the report --- as we've come to expect whenever such issues are discussed at all in the mainstream --- Neal is skeptical and as well, quotes two other skeptics. They only bother to quote one supporter of the study, one of the authors themselves.

One of the great misconceptions (generously) or misdirections (more probably) that the piece offers is Neal's notion that...

it strains credulity to think that there was some sort of massive, coordinated effort to steal an election. Such a conspiracy would have had to cross state lines, involve hundreds or thousands of people and trickle down from the heights of power to the lowest precinct worker.

...Well, no. That's not actually the case at all. It would take a relatively small number of people to secretly flip the vote only in the states where it was needed, and even in only the counties were such manipulation of the vote would be less likely to be noticed (say, in Democratic Counties...where there was indeed much unexplained funny business, to say the least, last November).

Let's focus, however, on the good news, as we're wont to do. Neal starts the column thusly...

Sorry, cats. It's been that sort of a day (or two, or three). Open Thread to your hearts content! I'll be back as soon as I can...Just in time to leave entirely for a bunch o' days in a row. More on that soon.

Checked In, But Didn't Check Out! 13 Times!
(Is it the White House, or Hotel California?!)
By Brad Friedman on 4/24/2005 4:25pm PT

RAW STORY beats the competition. As usual.

The Freedom of Information Requests from the Secret Service have come in. And whoops...look what RAW found!

Guckert made more than 200 appearances at the White House during his two-year tenure with the fledging conservative websites GOPUSA and Talon News, attending 155 of 196 White House press briefings. He had little to no previous journalism experience, and previously worked as a male escort.

Perhaps more notable than the frequency of his attendance, however, is several distinct anomalies about his visits.

Guckert made more than three dozen excursions to the White House when there were no scheduled briefings. On many of these days, the Press Office held press gaggles aboard Air Force OneŚwhich raises questions about what Guckert was doing at the White House.

On at least fourteen occasions, Secret Service records show either the entry or exit time missing. Generally, the existing entry or exit times correlate with press conferences; on most of these days, the records show that Guckert checked in but was never processed out.

In March, 2003, Guckert left the White House twice on days he had never checked in with the Secret Service. Over the next 22 months, Guckert failed to check out with the Service on thirteen days. On several of these visits, Guckert either entered or exited by a different entry/exit point than his usual one. On one of these days, no briefing was held.

And then there's this...

Others who have covered the White House say not checking in or out with the Secret Service is unusual, especially in the wake of Sept. 11. The Secret Service declined to comment.
...
Guckert declined to comment, directing all questions to the Service.
..
The Service keeps a record of who approved passes only for the last sixty days; previous records are kept by the White House.

Okey doke. Watch for "Executive Privilege" to be invoked any day now.

In addition to their article (which has more details on the above, in addition to the some of the odder sign-in, sign-out sequences), RAW STORY also has the RAW DATA from the Secret Service.

If anyone sees the Mad Hatter, pay him no mind.

Thanks again to Winter Patriot and all of the "6 or 7" BRAD BLOGGERS for your support during last night's BRAD SHOW broadcast! Can't wait until this thing gets easier! As mentioned, this radio game is no easy feat for a novice, especially suddenly, out of the blue and from the road! We look forward to getting back to a homebase where we can really start cooking and kicking some hard ass! (And getting rid of that annoying buzz!)

As well, literally moments before last night's show I received some sad news that a good friend of mine (and a fine BRAD BLOG supporter!) had died suddenly. Didn't help this beginner to get through the first hour or two of the show without being a bit shaky. But having heard at least the last couple of hours of the rebroadcast today (to be available via BRAD SHOW archives shortly!) I think we did okay. Last night's show goes out to my dear, departed friend Aldrich Allen. Godspeed, friend...You are missed.

As mentioned on the air, we've got to get largely off the grid this coming week for some long-planned obligations that will take us to yet another state. If we can get on the air from yet another new location, we will. Otherwise, a rebroadcast or some other devious plan will occcur for this coming Saturday's show.

Either way, we could probably use a few hours sleep, or a day or two or three or four of brain rest. It's been a tough week, month, several months and we better take care of ourselves or we won't be able to continue kicking badguy ass and taking names...And there's plenty more of that to do in the weeks and months ahead. Thanks in advance for your understanding and --- as always-- for your extraordinary support.

We shall continue to overcome!

No, Not Baker...Not His Commission...But Getting Closer!
Bush Appointed Chairman says Commission 'Underfunded', 'Neglected' by Lawmakers!
By Brad Friedman on 4/22/2005 10:36am PT

Another intellectually-honest Republican is found!

Just in from AP...

The first chairman of the federal voting agency created after the 2000 election dispute is resigning, saying the government has not shown enough of a commitment to reform.

DeForest Soaries, a Baptist minister, said Friday that his resignation from the commission created by Congress would take effect next week.

Soaries, 53, cited personal reasons for resigning and said he wants to spend more time with his family in New Jersey --- but he added the decision was prompted in part by a lack of support for the commission from Congress and the federal government.

"All four of us had to work without staff, without offices, without resources. I don't think our sense of personal obligation has been matched by a corresponding sense of commitment to real reform from the federal government," Soaries told The Associated Press.

Soaries is a Republican who was the White House's pick to join the Election Assistance Commission, which was created by the Help America Vote Act of 2002 to help states enact voting reforms.
...
Soaries and the other commissioners complained from the beginning that the commission was underfunded and neglected by the federal lawmakers who created it.

And Around the World!
...And the Tribune Syndicate's Bob Koehler does it again!
By Brad Friedman on 4/22/2005 10:21am PT

So while we're on a roll...it seems that Clint Curtis' name and story (even briefly) are popping up in papers all around the country, and even around the world. Good folks (no doubt fine BRAD BLOG readers and patriots all!) seem to be contacting their local papers with letters to the editor to discuss the Election 2004 debacle, and tossing in the relevance of Curtis' story along with it! (See this page for more on Curtis if you need...and if so, where in the hell have you been for the last six months!?! ;-)

So while we spend some hours working on some important things today, please feel free to take the time to jot a letter or two to your local papers. As we hope you've realized, "6 or 7" letters can make a difference.

Some recent examples... Chicago's Northwest Herald in a letter headlined "Election thieves":

Then, there is the complicated story of Florida computer programmer Clint Curtis, who recently passed a lie-detector test on his claim that he was asked by Rep. Tom Feeney, R-Fla., a Bush family friend, to design an undetectable program for flipping touch-screen votes, which he did.

From Nashville's City Paper, in a letter headlined "The most important issue":

Clint Curtis, the Republican whistle-blower who has testified that he was asked by (a current Republican Congressman) Tom Feeney ? who has denied it ? to write a program to hack a vote computer, came and demonstrated to us how it could be done. Curtis also announced that he had passed a lie-detector test about his allegation.

Then in the Ireland's Irish Times last Saturday earlier this week, they ran an article (paid subscription required) which included the following:

The arguments have been given a boost by a story in the St Petersburg Times in Florida, which is sceptical of conspiracy claims, but details charges by Clint Curtis, a 46-year-old computer programmer, that he was asked by a Republican Congressman, Tom Feeney, to come up with an undetectable system to fix elections.

Feeney denied the charge saying: " . . . and I didn't lead the purple Martian invasion of Earth either". But Curtis passed a lie detector test, and the blogs are lighting up again.

And finally, our new friend, Robert Koehler of the Tribune Syndicate, follows up his courageous and frank "Silent Scream of Numbers" piece --- the first that we know of from the "mainstream" to out and out charge that "Election 2004 was stolen" --- with another triumphant home run in his latest column. Titled, "Democracy's Abu Ghraib" the piece asks "If they can disable an election, what's coming next?" Just one of the many worthwhile money quotes:

I never doubted, even after moving to Chicago in the mid-'70s, with the old Daley Machine (?vote early and vote often?) still huffing and wheezing, that elections mattered and could alter the balance of power. I never felt disenfranchised. Now that certainty is gone, replaced by dread.

Read on. Then write on! The march of the "6 or 7" must continue and will prevail! Keep making noise!

The BRAD BLOG has just received a personal phone call from Congressman John Conyers (not from his staff, but from the good Congressman himself), thanking us for the work that everyone has done on behalf of the nation to get the message through to the Baker/Carter National "Election Reform" Commission that their current make-up and apparent direction is wholly unacceptable.

Conyers has just finished meeting with Dr. Robert A. Pastor, the executive director of the commission, and has been told that he will be able to continue working and meeting with the commission and it's various members over the coming weeks and months.

He plans on meeting with former Jimmy Carter personally to discuss some of his concerns.

As a good faith measure, Conyers has told Pastor that for the time being he would ask us (and you) to direct all Email with concerns or information for the commission to CDEM@american.edu. We will shortly change the Email to the Commission page at Velvet Revolution to reflect that address change in similar good faith. We would only do that at the request of Mr. Conyers, and so it will be done. For the time being.

He will be issuing a full statement concerning his meeting and the commission shortly at ConyersBlog.

Plans to Meet With Jimmy Carter, Daschle and Others on Commission to Detail Concerns!
By Brad Friedman on 4/21/2005 12:42pm PT

The BRAD BLOG has just received a personal phone call from Congressman John Conyers (not from his staff, but from the good Congressman himself!), thanking us for the work that everyone has done on behalf of the nation to monitor the Baker/Carter "election reform" commission and to seek fairness from it.

Conyers has just finished meeting with Dr. Robert A. Pastor, the executive director of the commission, and has been promised that the commission and its members will continue to work and meet with him about his concerns over the commission, its make-up and its current direction over the coming weeks and months.

He plans on meeting with former President Jimmy Carter personally to discuss some of these serious concerns.

As a good faith measure, Conyers has told Pastor that he would ask us (and you) to direct all Email with concerns or information for the commission to CDEM@american.edu. We will shortly change the Email to the Commission page at Velvet Revolution to reflect that address change in similar good faith. We would only do that at the request of Mr. Conyers, and so it will be done. For the time being.

Hard Right Media Outlet Actually Runs Non-Hit Piece on Velvet Revolution Concerns!
(We are definitely through the looking-glass now...)
By Brad Friedman on 4/20/2005 2:32pm PT

The hard-right Washington Times running a fair piece on Velvet Revolution's demands that James Baker leave the National Election Reform Commission? What's their game?...Either way, we're happy to see it...

    Bipartisan?

We wrote earlier about a newly impaneled bipartisan presidential election reform commission made up of the likes of former President Jimmy Carter, former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, both Democrats, and former White House Chief of Staff James A. Baker III, a Republican.

Now, an election-reform advocacy group wants Mr. Baker, who served under former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush, removed as the commission's co-chairman before the panel gets busy on whatever reform it can accomplish.

Representing about 100 affiliated election-reform organizations, the Velvet Revolution considers Mr. Baker "a partisan political operative and Bush family loyalist" who "will irreconcilably sully the credibility of such a commission and render its findings completely suspect, wholly useless and, regrettably, without merit."

"Mr. Baker is, in fact, the architect behind the invidious scheme implemented to ensure that the votes of all Americans would not be counted in the unfortunate and undemocratic 2000 presidential election fiasco," says the group, referring to when the soon-to-be-inaugurated George W. Bush dispatched Mr. Baker to voter-challenged Florida.

The piece above ran on March 31, but we only caught it today thanks to BRAD BLOG commenter, Bushw@cker. Now waiting for the other shoe to drop...

Dr. Robert A. Pastor Accuses Velvet Revolution of 'Harassment', Sending Fake Email!
Supplies no evidence for his conspiracy theory, nor his firm belief that Republicans won Election 2004.
By Brad Friedman on 4/19/2005 10:17pm PT

Earlier this evening, we received a phone call from Dr. Robert A. Pastor, the Executive Director of the Baker/Carter National Election Reform Commission.

    It was an interesting conversation.

Apparently, he was irate at us because Americans are sending Email to him and the commissioners complaining about the fact that James A. Baker, III is co-chairing the Commission. Baker, of course, is the long-time Bush Family loyalist and Bush/Cheney trial law attorney who architected the strategy to ensure that Americans' votes would not be counted in the 2000 election.

Pastor made it clear that he felt those Emails, sent by individual American citizens to the commission, actually constituted "harassment" and he charged that the thousands of Emails that he and the commissioners were receiving was, in actuality, being sent by "about 6 or 7 people"!

Velvet Revolution is a coalition of some 100 Election Reform and Voting Rights organizations, none of whom were invited to participate in this commission in any way, nor even knew anything about its creation. VR is co-founded by BRAD BLOG and has created a page where Americans can send Email to Jimmy Carter and the commissioners to let them know how they feel about Baker sitting as Co-Chair and some of his other cronies being seated on this commission.

If you are not one of the "6 or 7 people" who have already sent Email via that page, feel free to do so now.

If you are one of the "6 or 7 people" that have sent email via that page, you can let Bob Pastor know that it was really you who sent the email hoping to make your voice heard, by sending him another email to that effect at his email address, rpastor@american.edu (Ed Note: Please write to Pastor for now at CDEM@american.edu - See this later article for an explanation as to why), which is posted on his public webpage at the American University, Center for Democracy & Election Management site. His phone number is also listed on that page if you'd like to chat with him, but we will do him the courtesy of not reposting it here.

We did our best to make notes of the extraordinary conversation that took place during the phone call as it unfolded...These are some of the highlights...or lowlights as the case may be...
