In Iran, in public opinion, at the ballot box, in the courtroom...
By Brad Friedman on 4/23/2026 6:46pm PT

When your brand is "WINNING!", but you keep losing and can't seem to win anything anymore, things fall apart quickly. As more and more evidence suggests on today's BradCast, that's where our flailing and faltering President finds himself. Of course, once gain, we all have to pay the price for his failures. [Audio link to full show follows this summary.]

Among the evidence in support of that thesis on today's program...

  • Donald Trump's war in Iran is a disaster. He is losing and clearly has no clue how to either win or simply get out of it. He is hoping to merely will it all away. It didn't work with COVID, it isn't working with his war. He may think that declaring an "indefinite" ceasefire ends his ill-considered war. But it doesn't. A fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies are still not coming out of the Gulf with Iran's blockade, as the global economy falters, fuel is being rationed, gasoline prices remain high, inflation and unemployment is on the rise, and the global supply chain, once again (just like during his mismanagement of COVID), is beginning to buckle under the strain.
  • And, because he doesn't know what to do about any of it, this week he fired his Navy Secretary in the middle of the largest naval standoff the U.S. has been involved in since WWII. Naturally, the guy he tapped to replace him is a loon.
  • In the bargain, Trump's polls are collapsing, to levels as low or lower than the lowest, final days of his post-insurrection first term --- into George W. Bush territory.
  • Trump and his sycophantic worshipers, like FBI Director Kash Patel and wingnut activist Laura Loomer, are failing along with him. In this example, they are seeing defamation lawsuits they'd filed against media outlets, pundits and even satirists, laughed out of court. In recent days: Patel's lawsuit against a former FBI official, dismissed. Loomer's lawsuit against Bill Maher and HBO, dismissed.
  • Trump isn't doing much better himself on that front. Ridiculous defamation lawsuits seeking billions of dollars for some absurdly perceived slight don't really work unless you have sued someone who needs something from you --- while you corruptly run the federal government --- who is willing to settle for millions in order to profit in the billions. Trump's lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch and the Wall Street Journal, dismissed. Trump's failing social media company's lawsuit filed against The Guardian, dismissed, refiled, and finally withdrawn just days before a first court hearing.
  • And, because it's never Trump's fault, after his money losing Trump Media & Technology, Inc. --- whose only product of note is his failing Truth Social outlet --- saw another horrendous year, taking in just $3.7 million in revenue while losing $712 million, Trump finally, quietly booted its CEO, former Republican Congressman Devin Nunes this week. That'll fix things. The public company, which trades as "DJT" and once sold shares to MAGA chumps for nearly $100/share. It has more than $6 billion in investor wealth since then, closing down again on Thursday by more than 3%, with shares tumbling to a pathetic $9.17. So much losing.
  • Finally, Desi Doyen joins us for another winning edition of Green News Report, with bad news on the global economy amid Trump's war; bad news on climate change and drought for the majority of the U.S.; but good news indeed for renewable energy which has now overtaken coal as the main generator of electricity globally...

Dangerously unbalanced 'Escalator-in-Chief' unleashes new war crime threats in profane Easter Sunday rant; seeks $1.5 trillion for the Pentagon; has already lost to Iran; Also: Callers ring in!...
By Brad Friedman on 4/6/2026 6:08pm PT

Perhaps we should have known when he announced his run for President after coming down an escalator, after all. In any event, we're back for today's BradCast after a week off for Spring Break, with a lot to catch up with. [Audio link to full show follows this summary.]

We begin by catching up on just some of the news we missed over the past week, including his corrupt firing of corrupt women --- Kristi Noem, Pam Bondi --- to help distract from his own personal failures.

But Donald Trump's profane, social media post on Easter Sunday, threatening war crimes (which is, itself, a war crime) sort of helps focus both the mind and today's program.

"Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!!," he vowed, adding: "Open the Fuckin' Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. President DONALD J. TRUMP".

Today (Monday), during a lengthy news conference at the White House to tout the rescue of a downed U.S. airman in Iran on Sunday, Trump repeated the his threat of war crimes --- including complete destruction of civilian power infrastructure in Iran, "back to the stone age" --- to happen tomorrow at 8pm, he vowed, if Iran doesn't agree to whatever conditions Trump claims to be demanding now. In a war that he's, arguably, already lost.

The response to his weekend tweet, from not-insane people on the right, like Marjorie Taylor Greene, and from the not-right, like UK columnist Christopher Bucktin, seem to make clear that not-insane people around the globe, at this point, see Trump in serious and terrifying mental decay. So do medical professionals.

All of which brings us back to a point we discussed in our last show before Spring Break: Trump has become a serious danger to both the nation and the world. So much so, that even corrupt, compromised, evil J.D. Vance would be a more palatable alternative to the unstable, psychologically broken man who now terrifyingly has his finger on the nuclear button. At least in my opinion.

We open up the phones to listeners today to see if they agree on that and much more. Hope you'll tune in!...

Guest: John Bergmayer of Public Knowledge; Also: Trump TACOs on Iran threat, celebrates Mueller death; Callers ring in...
By Brad Friedman on 3/23/2026 6:35pm PT

Today on The BradCast: Yet another reminder of the continuing importance of independent media over our public airwaves, as yet another massive --- and arguably unlawful --- media mega-merger narrows corporate control of local television stations and the public airwaves to fewer and fewer chieftains. [Audio link to full show follows this summary.]

Before we get to our guest today, and then a few calls from listeners, a few headlines from over the weekend and into today...

  • "Good. I'm glad he's dead," is a phrase that will be on the lips of tens, if not hundreds of millions of Americans at some point in the not too distant future. This past week, however, only our demented President was using it to describe the passing of 81-year old Robert Mueller, a war hero, patriot, and decades-long public servant to Republicans and Democrats alike. The former Republican FBI Director also came out of retirement to lead the independent Special Counsel investigation of Russia's interference in the 2016 election of Donald J. Trump --- who is not yet dead.
  • The second part of the depraved, degenerate Trump's obnoxious social media attack on the late FBI Director read: "He can no longer hurt innocent people!" Trump would then go on to threaten the lives of 92 million Iranians with the war crime of "obliterat[ing]" the country's power plants (and desalination plants, their drinking water supply, along with them) "within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time" if Iran refused to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. But, Trump chickened out, as he does, before the deadline arrived, claimed that talks with Iran were going well, and extended the threat for five more days. The stock market recovered a bit of what it lost last week and oil prices slightly fell, even as Iran claimed there were no talks underway with the U.S., directly or through intermediaries. TACO.

Then, we're joined by JOHN BERGMAYER, Legal Director at the D.C.-based nonprofit watchdog Public Knowledge regarding his groups lawsuit, filed today, in response to what the group describes as the unlawful merger between two huge local television station owners, Nexstar and Tegna. He announced on today's program that the organization has now filed a suit to block it.

The merger was approved late last week by Trump's corrupt FCC Chair Brendan Carr, after Nexstar showed it's loyalty to the Administration last year by keeping Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the airwaves even longer than ABC did, after the late-night host made a joke the Administration didn't like.

"A lot of these broadcast stations used to be local, semi-mom-and-pop-esque businesses, and they've been swooped up into these giant nationwide chains," Bergmayer explains. After consolidation, their newsrooms are gutted and replaced by more and more prepackaged content, often with a political bent toward the Right, and stripped of the local news coverage that so many Americans, for so many decades, had come to know and trust.

The merger violates long-standing federal statutes and FCC rules that prevent any one company from reaching more than 39% of American households. But Trump's corrupt FCC chair, at Trump's instructions, has waived the rules and is violating the laws, according to Bergmayer, by allowing the new mega-company to acquire local stations that reach a gob-smacking 80% of American homes.

"There are several lawsuits already filed in this deal. State attorneys general are suing on pure anti-trust grounds [against] a merger that violates anti-trust laws. Others include a coalition of broadband companies. And I can announce Public Knowledge is also suing in a different court. We are bringing up more of the communications law arguments."

The whole point of these laws adopted by Congress and signed by Presidents "was all about promoting media diversity," Bergmayer tells me. "A healthy democracy really depends on that." Now, he says, the laws and rules have been hollowed out. He concedes the FCC "does have the authority to waive" certain rules. But not on the limits to station ownership. "The 39% number was negotiated in Congress... and it was taken out of the realm of policies that the FCC has the authority to waive or to modify," he explains.

"It's a nationwide cap, and it's about controlling access to 39% of viewers, essentially," he says, noting if the FCC's ruling holds, it would be "a serious change to the structure of the market." And all done, he notes, at the direction of Donald Trump who personally called publicly for the FCC to do his bidding, even though the Commission is supposed to be an independent agency, separated by Congressional statute from control by the President.

Much more on all of this on today's show, and how media outlets in just about every town in America will now be affected by it, as Nexstar accelerates their gutting of the previously most trusted newsrooms in America.

Finally, a bit more on Trump's questionable claims about negotiations with Iran, reaction to his comments about Mueller's passing, some good news from the lower courts finding the Pentagon's new rules for media coverage to be patently unconstitutional, and callers ring on the upcoming No Kings rallies this coming Saturday in thousands of American cities, and more...

Trump has unleashed a potential nightmare with his war on Iran...
By Brad Friedman on 3/12/2026 7:26pm PT

Now is the time that the nation and the world really need our corporate media to rise to the occasion. I suspect they won't. But we try to do our part as best as we can on today's (and every day's!) BradCast. [Audio link to full show is below this summary.]

Here's a quick description and some of the source material referenced in today's lollapalooza of a program...

  • They have also long failed to meet the moment in covering our climate crisis, which is set to wreak havoc and smash records across much of the country as we move into next week. Heat records in the West, blizzards in the North, and likely tornadoes in between. All part of the climate changed mess that Trump is ignoring --- and making worse --- every single day now.
  • After Trump killed Mojtaba Khamenei's wife and father --- and more than 150 school girls --- on the first day of the war, Iran's new Supreme Leader vows vengeance, including the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz now roiling global markets and spiking the price of oil, as well as on "other fronts in which the enemy has little experience and would be highly vulnerable."
  • One of those "other fronts" could, I suppose, be the Trump FBI's irresponsibly reported and "unverified" claim (a word that ABC News left out of its initial reporting!) that "Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United States homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California." Of course, if there were any truth to an imminent drone attack, it would be regrettable, to say the least, that FBI Director Kash Patel fired a whole bunch of the folks leading the Bureau's highly experienced Iran counterintelligence team just days before Trump launched his new war.
  • It is also regrettable that, just yesterday, Republicans in the U.S. Senate blocked a bill by Democrats to reopen every single agency in the Dept. of Homeland Security other than ICE and CPB, as the White House continues to block any guardrails against the thuggery (and murders of American citizens!) by the nation's immigration law enforcement officials. The nearly month-long shutdown of DHS means that the U.S. Coast Guard is currently unfunded. That seems a bad idea if there is REALLY a concern about drone attacks by "an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United States homeland."
  • It is similarly regrettable that Republicans refuse to fund DHS and the nation's cybersecurity watchdog along with it --- the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), which is also shut down during the DHS funding fight. This week we have seen the first major attack by a hacker group tied to the Iranian Intelligence Ministry since the start of the war. The attack against Stryker, a medical equipment and technology firm in Michigan, has reportedly wiped out and stolen data from tens of thousands of telephones and other networked devices at the company this week.
  • But the most regrettable of all may be that, just prior to Trump's attack against Iran's nuclear energy facilities last June, Iran is believed to have removed about a 1,000 pounds of uranium enriched to 60% of what would be needed to create a nuclear bomb, and 10,000 pounds of uranium enriched from 2 to 5%. All of it reportedly evacuated from the facilities in small, SCUBA-sized tanks and potentially now available to be used anywhere for anything Iran may want, including dirty bombs detonated by either them or any of their many proxy militias in the region.

This enriched uranium was made possible by Trump's decision to unlawfully tear up the Obama-era anti-nuclear agreement with Iran that, by all measures, was working and had previously preventing the sort of enrichment that occurred after Trump ended it.

That is just one of the reasons why University of Chicago's veteran international security and terrorism expert Robert Pape, author of "Escalation Trap", asked last night on MS NOW when discussing the likelihood of Trump needing to put American boots on the ground in Iran: "How else would you even try to get this enriched uranium? How are we gonna find that 10,000 pounds? That 1,000 pounds? When they could be in SCUBA tanks [in] a territory two and a half times the size of Texas?"

"This is just a disaster in the making," he warned, adding: "I think we're probably only at the beginning of the disaster as it unfolds."

  • Finally, speaking of disasters in the making...Desi Doyen joins us for our latest Green News Report, as the price of oil skyrockets and our climate disaster continues with record heat melting California's snowpack and the rate of simultaneous heat waves and droughts having increased significantly thanks to global warming...

Also: Kari Lake unlawfully killed VOA; Callers ring in on how to overcome our ongoing nightmares...
By Brad Friedman on 3/9/2026 6:05pm PT

It's Happy Beginning of Daylight Saving Time Day on today's BradCast! (The actual unofficial start of Summer!) That said, thanks in (very small part) to last night's Spring Forward clock change, I'm too tired to write much today. So... [Audio link to full show follows this summary.]

Among our many stories covered today...

  • Our brightest news of the day: A Reagan-appointed federal judge over the weekend ruled that former Phoenix local news anchor, twice-failed statewide candidate and election denier Kari Lake's destruction of the beloved Voice of America was all entirely illegal. Turns out she was never legally serving in her role as Trump's Acting Director of the independent executive agency that oversees it. Presumably --- barring any successful changes at the appellate level --- thousands of people unlawfully fired by Lake at the 84-year old worldwide global media outlet must be rehired.
  • An update on Donald Trump's horrible, still-expanding War on Iran, including a seventh U.S. service member has been killed; new evidence that the U.S. was responsible for bombing a girls' school in the southern part of the country on Day 1 of the war, killing about 175 people, many of them children; an even harder-line cleric is chosen to be Iran's Supreme Leader, with 56-year old Mojtaba Khamenei now set to replace his assassinated 96-year father Ali Khamenei; and oil and natural gas prices are spiking as production in the region grinds to a standstill.
  • And a few thoughts today --- from Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953 to Hawaii's Democratic U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz in 2025, and me --- on the fact that there is always plenty of money for the U.S. military industrial complex to wage wars anywhere in the world. There's just never enough to make sure that you have food, housing, education, healthcare, good roads and a happy life.

Finally, we open the phones to listeners on all of the above, and the conversations quickly --- and, happily! --- turn to "what the hell can and should we do about it?!"

Tune in for another lively BradCast!...

Another unlawful foreign war without explanation or exit strategy, mostly to distract from some very bad news for the President; Callers ring in...
By Brad Friedman on 3/2/2026 6:15pm PT

Okay. It's not called "Operation Epstein Fury". It's called "Operation Epic Fury". But who's kidding who here? Here we ago again. Today on The BradCast, another unlawful foreign regime change war by the U.S. is now underway in the Middle East. In this case, launched by a President who ran for office, lying over and over again that he was against such wars. [Audio link to full show follows below.]

As usual, tune in for much much more. But, among the many points made and news shared today before we get to callers ringing in on Donald Trump's new war on Iran in the second half the show...

  • Yes, J.D. Vance really wrote an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal in 2023 headlined: "Trump's Best Foreign Policy? Not Starting Any Wars" with the sub-hed: "He has my support in 2024 because I know he won't recklessly send Americans to fight overseas."
  • Yes, Stephen Miller actually tweeted just 4 days before the November 2024 President election: "To anyone still gullible enough to fall for scummy media hoaxes: Trump said warmongering neocons love sending your kids to die for wars they would never fight themselves. Liz Cheney is Kamala's top advisor. Liz wants to invade the whole Middle East. Kamala = WWIII. Trump = Peace."
  • Yes, Donald Trump really did spend years decrying "stupid" U.S. Presidents who spent "$8 trillion" on wars in the Middle East instead of building roads and bridges and schools and hospitals in the U.S. He really did say, over and over, in 2011 that "in order to get elected @BarackObama will start a war with Iran". He really did say in 2012 that Obama would "attack Iran in order to get re-elected," and "Now that Obama's Poll numbers are in a tailspin, watch him start a war with Iran. He's desperate." That Obama would have to do so to "save face", and Trump really did declare in 2013: "Remember that I predicted a long time ago that President Obama will attack Iran because of his inability to negotiate properly --- not skilled!" [Emphasis added.]
  • For the record, Barack Obama never did attack Iran. But he did negotiate a deal with Iran and other major countries to successfully prevent Iran from being able to obtain a nuclear weapon, an agreement that Trump unlawfully violated and ripped up after taking office. He's been begging Iran to strike a new deal ever since. But now his polls are in a tailspin. He is trying to save face, and, because of his inability to negotiate properly, he is (unlawfully and without Constitutional or Congressional authorization) choosing to spend billions on another foreign interventionist war instead of fixing roads and bridges and hospitals and schools in the U.S.
  • In fact, Trump is apparently now bombing schools and hospitals in Iran, killing nearly two hundred school girls on the first weekend of his latest misadventure, as six U.S. service members have so far been announced killed and three of our F-15s have been shot out of the sky over Kuwait, with the crews, thankfully, ejecting safely.
  • So far, 555 Iranians have reportedly been killed, according to the Iranian Red Crescent Society. At least 11 people have been killed in Israel.
  • The Supreme Leader of Iran, 86-year old Ayatollah Ali Khamanei has been killed. But the attack on Khamanei was "so successful," according to Trump, that, apparently, so were the preferred choices of the U.S. to replace him. So, now what?
  • Why does Trump say he bombed Iran? Well, he seems to be making up new reasons every few hours since ordering the first bombs on Saturday morning along with Israel. To prevent an imminent attack on the U.S. by Iran? Well, that can't be. Nobody believes they have the intercontinental missiles to do that. So, he's already in violation of both U.S. and international law. To prevent them from restarting the nuclear program he claimed to have "completely obliterated" when he previously attacked Iran just eight months ago? To stop terror attacks by Iran-funded militias in the Middle East? We discuss all of the above. But he certainly didn't bomb Iran to distract media attention from his dreadful and getting-dreadful-er approval ratings as the midterm primaries are now under way, right? Certainly not as a distraction from the fact that his DOJ has been caught red-handed unlawfully covering up the release of very serious allegations by a survivor of Jeffrey Epstein that she was also raped by Trump when she was just 13-years old, right?
  • As you can tell, we've got a lot to discuss today. And a lot of callers in the second half of the show who want to join in on the conversation. I hope you'll tune in...

Effort to punish participation in 'illegal orders' video 'trampled' First Amendment rights, chills 'valuable' discourse from retired vets...
By Ernest A. Canning on 2/13/2026 12:15pm PT

On Thursday, Senior US District Court Judge Richard J. Leon, a George W. Bush appointee, issued a Preliminary Injunction preventing Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth from implementing the letter of censure he directed at Democratic Senator Mark Kelly, a former (retired) U.S. Navy Captain and former astronaut.

The preliminary injunction prevents the Navy from conducting a hearing to re-determine Kelly's retirement grade. It also prevents reliance on Hegseth's censure letter in order to carry out "threats of additional criminal or administrative action."

In his Memorandum Opinion Judge Leon expressly found that Hegseth "trampled on Senator Kelly's First Amendment freedoms and the constitutional liberties of millions of military retirees," when he issued a letter that censured Kelly for his participation in the duty to disobey illegal orders video, created with five other Congressional lawmakers, all military or intelligence veterans...

Guest: Dan Becker of the Center for Biological Diversity; Also: Mysterious El Paso, TX airport closure; Bondi unravels in Congress...
By Brad Friedman on 2/11/2026 7:06pm PT

There is, as usual, too much going on at once. That is, of course, by design of the sick, criminal gangster in the Oval Office. But it means that some of the most important stuff you need to know is getting lost amid all the noise. We do our best, on today's BradCast, to once again try to shine a spotlight on the most important thing you are least likely to hear the least about elsewhere. [Audio link to full story follows this summary.]

First off, a few stories you may hear something about today.

  • The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) suddenly, without notice or explanation, shut down the air space above the El Paso, Texas airport on the border with Mexico early on Wednesday for ten days. A few hours after the surprise announcement, the FAA said "never mind" and reopened it with little explanation. Early reporting suggests some sort of rift between the Pentagon and the FAA regarding drones flown by Mexican drug cartels into the U.S., and the testing of some sort of new anti-drone laser weapon in response. But, as Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX), whose district includes El Paso, said, "the information coming from the federal government does not add up." It doesn't. But we've got an alternative explanation that makes at least as much sense as the government's, and it has something to do with Donald Trump's longtime threats of war against our (former?) ally across the Southern Border.
  • Also today, Trump's demented U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi embarrassed the nation (and herself) again during U.S. House testimony regarding the DOJ's unlawful cover-up of the Epstein Files. We share some of the low-lights from Bondi's remarkably snide behavior before the House Judiciary Committee this afternoon, when she pretended to be angry that Democratic members wanted to talk more with her about Epstein and law enforcement, than about the stock market (bizarrely enough).

NEXT... The news you are almost certainly not hearing enough about this week, especially as it is news likely to adversely affect every single American --- and everyone else on our quickly warming planet --- for generations to come.

The corrupt Trump Administration's EPA is set to announce on Thursday that it is overturning the so-called "endangerment finding", initially issued by the EPA under George W. Bush, even though his Administration refused to open the email containing it at the time.

The endangerment finding was first drafted in response to a landmark 2007 Supreme Court case named Massachusetts v. EPA. The SCOTUS majority held at the time that under the mandates of the Clean Air Act, if greenhouses gasses that warm the planet, such as Carbon Dioxide and Methane, were found by the EPA to be "air pollutants" that can "reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare," the government was required to regulate them.

The EPA's eventually finding was officially adopted by Barack Obama's Administration, and is now the basis for the bulk of federal regulations limiting greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in the transportation sector, but many others as well. The fossil fuel industry has sought for years to overturn the scientific finding. Doing so would lead to the end of a majority of the federal government's climate related regulations.

Thanks to the corrupted Trump Administration, and a ridiculous Dept. of Energy "report" created by five climate science-denying stooges (unlawfully empaneled, according to a recent federal court ruling), the finding will be overturned on Thursday, in what Trump allies are describing as "total victory," following more than 15 years of work to restore the halcyon days of unregulated destruction of the atmosphere by the unmitigated burning of fossil fuels. The "total victory" comes as the last 11 years have been confirmed as the hottest ever recorded on planet Earth.

So, what does all of this mean? Can it be stopped in the courts? Can states now institute their own climate regulations to replace those likely to be ended by the federal government?

We're joined today by DAN BECKER, Director of the Safe Climate Transport Campaign at the Climate Law Institute of the nonprofit Center for Biological Diversity. Becker has long been a key player in the fight against climate change. He developed the strategy and led the fight for the Obama Administration's landmark program to cut emissions from cars, SUVs and pickups, the largest step any nation had taken at the time to slash climate warming emissions.

"It's huge," Becker tells me about the revocation of the finding. "Unfortunately, what the Trump Administration folks are going to do is not only revoke the Endangerment Finding, but they are going to repeal the biggest single step that any nation has ever taken, that used the Clean Air Act as a mechanism to cut pollution from cars," which are "the biggest problem, the biggest source of emissions in the United States."

"This is going to make kids sicker because there will be more air pollution. Kids with asthma will have more frequent asthma attacks. They'll miss more school. Their parents, who will have to stay home to take care of them, will miss more work. People with lung disease will suffer and some will die. People with heart disease will also have increased early deaths," he laments, describing some of the most immediate fallout from all of this.

But, while "this is bad for people," Becker says, "it's good for China because the Chinese auto industry wants to make a market in clean vehicles. And if they have no competition from United States automakers because the US automakers are going to make gas guzzlers as a result of not being required to make clean vehicles, then the Chinese manufacturers will win."

"That isn't really good for American workers. It's not good for American profits," he asserts, before adding: "They're laughing all the way to bank, as Trump does what General Motors told him to do."

All of this was "pre-cooked," explains Becker, when the oil and auto industries came aboard the Trump campaign. "The oil industry alone contributed $450 million dollars, and Trump said, 'If you give me a billion, I'll do anything you want.' This is the 'anything they want,' and they're getting it wholesale." It was, of course, "all pre-cooked, written out, and the menu laid by the Heritage Foundation" in Project 2025. Heritage, he notes, "is also funded by the oil industry."

So, a whole lot more on all of this today, including what you can do about it. Tune in and please share this one, as I expect most folks will hear little or nothing about it, with all of the other madness playing out, preventing most from ever even hearing about the thing that may cost them their jobs, their money, their health, and potentially even their own lives and those of their children and grandchildren...

Guest: Nuclear weapons policy analyst Stephen Schwartz; Also: 'Cowards' Bondi, Noem, and Gabbard cancel remarks to state elections chiefs...
By Brad Friedman on 2/5/2026 6:36pm PT

Today on The BradCast: The President of the United States likes to dismiss concerns about climate change by explaining that the real threat to humanity is actually nuclear weapons. And yet, as we were reminded again at midnight last night, he's not actually interested in doing anything about that threat to humanity either. [Audio link to full show follows this summary.]

FIRST... before we get to our excellent guest today on that, just a quick follow up to our recent coverage regarding last week's raid by the FBI at the Fulton County, Georgia elections warehouse, outside Atlanta, where federal officials absconded with ballots and other materials from the 2020 election that Donald Trump pretends was stolen from him, because he is unable to admit he lost it.

We've been trying to get to this story all week, but just a quick notice to mention that, following last week's raid --- and the Dept. of Justice's lawsuits against 23 states attempting to force them to turn over private voter data (suits that already being dismissed by federal courts) --- all three top Administration officials who had requested time to confront the bipartisan National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) annual conference last week, cancelled their appearances at the last minute.

NASS had rearranged the conference schedule to allow for remarks by Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. By Friday afternoon, however, all but Gabbard had cancelled. And just before her remarks were to begin, she pulled out as well. Maine's Democratic SoS, Shenna Bellows called them "cowards," noting, along with others, that the Administration's threats to interfere with upcoming elections is unlawful and likely to end poorly for them.

THEN... It's on to other, ahem, explosive news of the day. As of midnight last night, Trump allowed the last remaining nuclear arms treaty between the U.S. and Russia to expire. The New START agreement, struck with Russia by President Barack Obama in 2010, included strict caps on the numbers of ballistic missiles and nuclear warheads each country could deploy, and included an extensive verification regime. The 10-year pact was extended for another five years in 2021 by President Joe Biden, and Russia has said they were open to another extension. Trump simply let it expire.

We're joined today by long time nuclear weapons policy analyst STEPHEN SCHWARTZ, former Executive Director and Publisher of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, keepers of the notorious "Doomsday Clock". On his excellent social media feed at @AtomicAnalyst last night, Schwartz lamented that, while "Trump has boasted for decades that he knows everything there is to know about nuclear weapons and could easily negotiate a great deal with Russia," he allowed New START, "the last treaty constraining US and Russian nuclear weapons" to expire, and "hasn't lifted a tiny finger to replace it."

"He did absolutely nothing during his first term," Schwartz tells me today. "Now, here we are again. He did absolutely nothing during his first year in office, and now we have no treaty whatsoever. I think because, first of all, he doesn't care about it, and because he views the treaty as tainted because it was negotiated by his arch-enemy Barack Obama."

"It's a great loss for humanity. It's not a win for anybody," he opines. "Anybody who thinks that getting rid of the treaty will make the United States or the world safer hasn't been living in reality for quite some time."

Welp. That sounds like Trump.

Schwartz breaks down the specifics of New START, and the dangers now posed with its loss. We also discuss, among other things, the fact that Trump's so-called "Golden Dome" anti-missile system, if Congress ever called for it to be built, is likely to make the U.S. less safe, not more so.

"The Golden Dome is the latest iteration of decades of efforts to try to use technology to eliminate the political problem that gives us the ever-present threat of nuclear war," Schwartz, author of Atomic Audit: The Costs and Consequences of U.S. Nuclear Weapons Since 1940 explains. "But it only works --- if it works at all --- against weapons that are flying through the air. It does not work on anything that would be coming at you from under water [such as Russia's Poseidon drones, developed in response to the threat of a U.S. defensive missile shield], nor for that matter would it shoot down planes that would be carrying nuclear missiles or nuclear gravity bombs."

It does, however, result in adversaries building even more advanced and more numerous offensive weapons systems to ensure they can overcome such a defensive system.

There's a whole lot more with Schwartz today, including: his assessments of the various nuclear threats now posed by China, North Korea, Iran and others, and whether the U.S. under Trump remains the greatest nuclear threat to the planet; why it would be such a terrible idea for Trump to restart U.S. nuclear missile testing, as he vowed last year; and much more.

Tune in for our excellent, enlightening, educational and, at times, chilling conversation with Schwartz today.

FINALLY... We close with still more nuclear related news --- this time, nuclear energy --- and the Trump Dept. of Energy's secret change to nuclear power plant safety rules, in our latest Green News Report with Desi Doyen, on that and much more!...

Guest: Int'l relations expert Nicholas Grossman of Univ. of IL; Also: FBI raids journalist; U.S. evacuations in Qatar amid Trump's Iran threats...
By Brad Friedman on 1/14/2026 6:17pm PT

On today's BradCast: It's been less than two weeks since he ordered the U.S. military invasion of a sovereign nation, killed about 80 people, kidnapped their leader and his wife to put them on trial for something or other here in the U.S., claimed he now "runs" their country and controls their natural resources, to exploit and sell as he pleases, the money from which will be held in offshore bank accounts controlled by him. Oh, and he's now declared himself "Acting President" there. And we almost don't discuss any of it anymore, because he's moved on to his next several imperial conquests, not to mention his deadly militarized assaults of thousands of people who live in U.S. cities, including American citizens. As Jon Stewart recently asked in exasperation, "What are we even doing here?!" Good question, Jon. [Audio link to full program follows this summary.]

Before we try to make some kind of sense --- any kind of sense --- of all of that, a few other news items of note today...

  • And then they came for the journalists... Donald Trump's FBI raided the home of a Washington Post reporter on Wednesday, seizing her laptops, her phone and her smartwatch, as part of a supposed classified documents leak investigation requested by the Pentagon. The Post's Executive Editor described it as an "extraordinary, aggressive action [that] is deeply concerning and raises profound questions and concern around the constitutional protections for our work." The New York Times characterized the raid on a journalist's home as "a significant escalation in the Trump administration's tactics in seeking information from the news media." The journalist, Hannah Natanson, as AP explained, "has reported extensively on the federal workforce and recently published a piece describing how she gained hundreds of new sources --- leading one colleague to call her 'the federal government whisperer.'"
  • Here we go again?... In Qatar today, some personnel at a major U.S. air base that houses thousands of troops are reportedly being advised to evacuate immediately, amid growing unrest in Iran, the killing of hundreds of anti-government protesters by the ruling regime in Tehran, and Trump's vows to those protesters that "help is on the way." The base, Al Udeid Air Base outside of Doha, was targeted in Iran's response to the U.S. attack on nuclear facilities last July.

Then, as Mad King Trump saber rattles with both Iran and, perhaps even more incredibly, our NATO ally of Greenland, there is still the matter of his recent invasion of Venezuela less than two short weeks ago, and the power vacuum left in its wake as he tries to convince reticent American oil companies to go plunder the nation's vast oil reserves.

None of it is lawful. And, of course, none of it makes any sense. But, also, none of it is over, even if he, we, the media have, for the moment, moved momentarily on to other Trump-induced nightmares.

"This isn't close to over," argues my guest today, NICHOLAS GROSSMAN, International Relations professor and political scientist at the University of Illinois. He is quick to compare Trump's rush to praise himself for the attack and abduction of Venezuela's President, Nicolas Maduro, to George W. Bush's infamous "Mission Accomplished" speech in 2003, just after the initial assault on Iraq, before the nation would quickly devolve into years-long, deadly chaos and violence.

"Tactically," Grossman concedes, the operation in Venezuela "was very impressive. But not strategically so." He describes reports in recent days of runs on banks, stores, and paramilitaries in the streets, arguing that the "competitions for power" are just beginning. "The situation is likely to devolve rather than stabilize. Or just have a spate of violence, and then at which point the regime re-stabilizes. It's unclear why that would be better than where it was with Maduro in charge."

Grossman, who teaches classes on terrorism insurgency, national security policy and 21st century technology and warfare, wrote about Trump's unlawful assault last week, detailing how it is likely to make things worse, not better, in Venezuela, the United States, and elsewhere in the region.

Moreover, he tells me today, despite Trump's rhetoric, all of this is unlikely to result in a rush of American oil companies to exploit the nation's resources. "This is where the lack of any sort of follow-on plan creates such a problem," says Grossman. "There is not a reliable security situation there, especially long term. There's not reliable rule of law." Add that to a glut of oil already on the market keeping prices (and profits) low; a particularly dirty and difficult-to-refine crude available there; and it seems unlikely that any of this will actually pay off for anybody.

So, why, in fact, was it done in the first place? On that, argues Grossman: "It doesn't really need to be only one reason. It's many things possibly at once. A lot of it, I do think, is demonstration of power. Because they can."

"Nothing Trump and his administration have done have seemed to conceive of national interest in the same standard way that Presidents, various leaders, voters of both parties, had in the United States for many years. There's 'because I can, because then people will be more afraid of me, because people will be more likely to pay me off.'"

He speculates on other explanations as well, and rings in on where Trump's militaristic tirade is likely to bring the U.S. next, even if things begin to further devolve in Venezuela at the same time.

"The biggest effect seems to be that it has emboldened him. And emboldened actors such as Pete Hegseth, where they don't think anybody can stop them. And they certainly don't care about violating norms, or the long term risks of upsetting the international order."

There is much more troubling stuff to chew over in my broad conversation with Grossman today. I hope you'll tune in...

Plus: Callers ring in with their own thoughts...
By Brad Friedman on 1/5/2026 5:18pm PT

Well, we're back! And I had some great stuff I was looking forward to covering on our first BradCast after a long holiday break. But, of course, our psychotic President of the United States had other ideas. [Audio link to full show follows this summary.]

Don't worry. We will get to those other things that he'd prefer we don't cover, one way or another in coming days. But today we try to make sense of his stupid, senseless, unlawful attack on Venezuela late on Friday night/early Saturday morning, and of his kidnapping of that nation's corrupt President, Nicholas Maduro, and his wife. ("Corrupt" if only because he stole his 2024 election.)

Anyway, as you'll hear, I'm a bit under the weather today. So, I'm gonna keep this summary short.

We cover what happened; how unlawful it was; how much both Donald Trump and Team Trump lied about it all before, during and after; how clueless they seem to be about what happens next; and, ultimately, why he decided to attack Venezuela in the first place.

Yes, it's about distraction from the Epstein Files and the Jack Smith testimony. Yes, it's about oil, (but only somewhat, in my opinion). But it's also about at least two other things most of all: 1) A raw show of power by a very weak man and 2) Trump's rejection by the courts last year when he attempted to use the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 as justification for the mass deportation of Venezuelan migrants. Tune in for more on that, and for what our callers think it's all about...and which country (Cuba? Mexico? Colombia? Iran? Greenland?) will be next...

Johnson kills House vote on ACA subsidies; Hegseth refuses to release boat strike video; Trump declares fentanyl 'WMD'; Repubs push back at his remarks on Reiner murder; Wiles goes off script...
By Brad Friedman on 12/16/2025 6:26pm PT

Today on The BradCast: It's difficult to notice --- or trust your own eyes --- when it all happens in slow motion. At least until it happens quickly. But, yes, the wall continues to crack. Day by day. Brick by brick. [Audio to full show follows this summary.]

Among the many stories covered on today's program...

  • One of the worst headwinds that House Speaker Mike Johnson and his Congressional Republicans will be facing next year, in their hopes of hanging on to their narrow majority in the lower chamber, is their cuts to Affordable Care Act (ACA, or Obamacare) subsidies that are set to expire at year's end. It will skyrocket the cost of premiums for millions of Americans beginning on January 1. Today, Johnson announced his own caucus in the House could not agree on a fix, all but guaranteeing there will be no such fix until next year earliest. Congress will be recessing until 2026 at the end of this week.
  • On yesterday's Rachel Maddow Show, she was somewhat misleading in her suggestion that last night at midnight, December 15th, was the last chance to sign up for a health care policy under the Affordable Care Act to ensure health care coverage next year. In fact, the Open Enrollment period for Obamacare --- for both new policies or to change a current one --- continues until January 15th next year in most states. Though, depending on which state you are in, coverage may now not begin until February under a new policy. In several states, however, which run their own exchanges (rather than forcing resident to purchase policies via the federal exchange), including California, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Washington D.C., you can still sign up for policies (or change current ones) before the end of the year to see them take effect as of January 1. Costs are going to go up either way for millions of Americans, thanks to Republicans in Congress refusing to extend subsidies that would prevent monthly premiums for policies purchased via the Obamacare marketplaces from doubling or tripling in many cases from what they were this year.
  • Donald Trump and the U.S. Military's murder spree on the high seas continued on Monday with three new attacks on three supposed drug boats near the coast of Venezuela, bringing the number of people killed by our completely unlawful attacks to at least 95. In related news on Monday, Trump signed an Executive Order "designating fentanyl as a Weapon of Mass Destruction", in hopes of adding some --- any --- legal justification to both his murder strikes on boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, and a promised eventual attack on supposed "narco-terrorists" in Venezuela (even though fentanyl is not produced or trafficked from there.) Also relatedly, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday said he will not release video of the unlawful second strike on an alleged drug boat from September 2nd, when the U.S. fired on two shipwrecked survivors following an attack earlier in the day, a huge violation of both U.S. and International law.
  • Trump's not-insane, very powerful, and very low profile White House Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles, had a whole bunch of pretty shocking things to say about Trump, his policies (both foreign and domestic), his top appointees (from Vance to Bondi to Vought), his retribution campaign against political foes, and much more in some ten interviews reportedly given over the past year to an author who has written a book about WH Chiefs of Staff over the years. A number of Wiles' eyebrow raising remarks from those interviews were published by Vanity Fair today and D.C. is abuzz trying to figure out what it all means.
  • As still more bricks in the wall appear to be falling out, a number of Republicans, including MAGA loyalists past and present, have seemingly turned --- gently or otherwise --- against Donald Trump's deranged, repulsive remarks on Monday about the murder of Hollywood legend Rob Reiner, who was killed just hours earlier on Sunday along with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in their Los Angeles home.
  • Finally, Desi Doyen is here with our latest Green News Report as climate change-fueled torrential rain, flooding and levee failure plague the Pacific Northwest; Trump continues his very selective and political approval for federal disaster aid; and as New York City's congestion pricing program (which Trump opposes, natch) continues to clear the air in Midtown...

Guest: Politico's Alice Miranda Ollstein; Also: J6 pipe bomber; IG slams Hegseth; Dems 'disturbed' by boat strike video; Grand Jury denies new James indictment; SCOTUS allows TX' racial gerrymander...
By Brad Friedman on 12/4/2025 6:52pm PT

Yikes. Quite a news day. We do our best to keep up on today's BradCast. But our conversation about the political fight to avoid falling over the GOP's massive health care funding cliff at year's end, may be the most immediately important news of all today for tens of millions of Americans. [Audio link to full show follows this summary.]

Okay, we begin first with a few headlines. And there are a lot of them today, most still developing and several breaking just before and during the show. So, in short for the moment...

  • The Dept. of Justice arrested and charged a long-sought suspect today in the case of the unexploded pipe bombs left near the Democratic and Republican Committee headquarter buildings on the eve of January 6, 2021. They gave no details yet on how the Virginia man identified today was caught, nor what his motive may have been.
  • A Dept. of Defense Inspector General's report [PDF] was released today on DefSec Pete Hegseth's "Signalgate" scandal. Despite claims yesterday by Team Hegseth that the IG report offered him "TOTAL exoneration", it offers quite the opposite. It finds, among other things, that Hegseth "created a risk to operational security that could have resulted in failed U.S. mission objectives and potential harm to U.S. pilots" by detailing an attack on Yemen on the unsecured Signal app on his personal phone with high-level Cabinet members and an accidentally invited national security reporter. He also appears to have destroyed evidence in the matter.
  • Following a classified briefing at the Capitol today, several high-ranking Democratic members of the House and Senate Intelligence and Armed Services Committees said they were "deeply disturbed" after viewing "one of the most troubling things" they'd ever seen. They had just watched unreleased, still-classified, unedited footage from the September 2nd U.S. military rocket strike on two shipwrecked survivors of a previous strike on a supposed "drug boat" in the Caribbean. The unlawful order to carry out the second strike was previously reported to have been issued by Pete Hegseth. Such an attack is in strict violation of U.S. and International law, as well as the DoD's own Rules of War Manual. The Commander who reportedly carried out the double-tap strike, Admiral Mitch Bradley, is said to have claimed during today's briefing that the order to kill the survivors wasn't given by the SecDef. Still many unanswered questions here.
  • BREAKING just before airtime: After a federal judge last week tossed out Donald Trump's revenge indictment of New York Attorney General Letitia James, finding Trump's personal insurance lawyer, Lindsey Halligan, was unlawfully appointed as U.S. Attorney, a new prosecutor --- said to have actual prosecutorial experience --- was brought in from Missouri to file a new grand jury indictment today. The grand jury, however, rejected the new indictment!
  • BREAKING late in the show today: The corrupted, activist Republican majority on the U.S. Supreme Court, as somewhat expected, overruled a lower appeals court ruling (written by a Trump-appointed judge) that had blocked the state of Texas' mid-decade Congressional gerrymander. State Republican lawmakers drew the map over the summer, at Trump's urging, in hopes of flipping five U.S. House seats in the Lone Star State from "blue" to "red" next year. The lower court found the new map to be an unlawful racial gerrymander and blocked its use. The SCOTUS majority, however, while offering little to no reason for their 6 to 3 "shadow docket" ruling, suggested the new TX map was only a partisan gerrymander --- which is now allowable since their horrible 2019 ruling in Rucho --- as opposed to an unlawful (for now) racial gerrymander. They are now allowing the new gerrymander to be used in the 2026 midterms.
  • Thanks in no small part to the Trump Administration's shuttering of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) earlier this year, the global child mortality is now on the rise for the first time in decades. Nearly a quarter of a million more kids under the age of 5 are expected to die in 2025 than in 2024, according to a new report.

NEXT... Speaking of health care and both children and adults unnecessarily dying...we're joined today by Politico's Senior Heath Care Reporter ALICE MIRANDA OLLSTEIN as America heads toward a Republican-caused health care crisis cliff as of January 1.

Over the summer, Donald Trump and his Republicans in Congress passed their so-called "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" to give a trillion dollars in tax cuts mostly to the wealthy and added $2.4 trillion to the national debt, resulting in about half a trillion dollars in automatic cuts to Medicare. In the bargain, they also slashed a trillion dollars from Medicaid and hundreds of billions from the Affordable Care Act (ACA, or Obamacare), which will subsequently spike monthly health care premiums for some 24 million Americans as of January 1.

This is why Democrats refused to vote with Republicans to keep the government open for a record 43 days in October and November. At least until seven rogue Democrats and one independent who caucuses with them in the Senate, undermined their own party to vote with Republicans to reopen the Government. The only thing they received in exchange was the promise of a vote in the Senate this month on restoring the GOP cuts to the Affordable Care Act subsidies. That vote is scheduled to happen next week, but will require 60 votes for passage in the 100-seat Senate. No vote is currently scheduled for the U.S. House on this, as premium bills will otherwise be doubling and tripling for millions next year.

Ollstein, a longtime Capitol Hill reporter lays out the political and policy landscape and stakes as we barrel toward what is now quite likely to be a very serious health care crisis in the U.S., unless Republicans come to terms with the electoral tidal wave that otherwise awaits them next year. Her reporting this week suggests that the bulk of the GOP Congressional caucus either doesn't yet understand the concerns or doesn't care about what is about to happen.

"There's nothing like a looming deadline to juice Congress into action," she quips. "Although that action may not lead anywhere --- especially this time."

"There are a bunch of Republicans who do want to cut a deal," she stresses. "They are very anxious, about both the concrete ramifications of letting the subsidies expire --- that millions of their constituents will have higher bills, become uninsured, etc. --- and they are worried about the political consequences, that this will backfire in the 2026 midterms." But, Ollstein also notes, for many in the party, the otherwise now very popular "Obamacare" is still a dirty word after years of the GOP trying and failing to kill it "root and branch" or even offer any alternative to it.

We've got lots to sift through here today, in trying to make sense of the current political lay of the land, with many Republicans "afraid of a primary challenge from the right attacking them for 'supporting Obamacare,'" even if millions of their own Republican constituents now rely on it for their health care.

Tune in for all the details on this one. Too many to cover in a quick summary here. But the fight in the weeks ahead is going to affect all of us, including your health care prices, even if you are not an ACA customer, as Ollstein also explains.

FINALLY... Desi Doyen joins us for our latest Green News Report, as the Trump Administration rolls back fuel economy standards, which will increase the cost of everyone's gas; as the Administration's threats against Venezuela become more obviously about oil by the day; as youth climate activists sue to block new fossil fuel development in Utah; and as one boy from fire-ravaged Pacific Palisades here in Southern California rolls out a quickly blossoming idea to seed the area with wildflowers...and love...
