It’s always nice to find a website that features plenty of talk about freedom, democracy and the press. But it’s a special treat when you can actually see these things in action.
Welcome to Aljazeera. Three news items hit the front page at almost the same time today, and the story they tell in combination is much greater than the sum of its parts…
FREEDOM means you are free to tell everybody else what to do, if you’re the big dog. Otherwise, FREEDOM means you are free to do what the big dog tells you to do. Have a look at some FREEDOM in action!
A top Chinese finance official said recently that Beijing has no timeframe for reform of its foreign exchange system, despite increasing pressure from the United States and others to throw open its currency regime.
Snow is trying to get the Chinese to move to ‘greater flexibility’ with an urgency which reflects rather poorly on a supposed great power, but then again he is probably trying so hard because he knows that without at least some measure of support from the Chinese, the American dollar would sink like a rock. And therefore he must be enjoying his freedom to tell the Chinese what to do — and to do so in a very public way:
“We’re disappointed they haven’t moved, we are not happy with where they are and now is the time for them to move.”
Well of course it’s time for them to move, Mr. Snow. In your eyes. But what if the Chinese have a different view of how they should run their economy? What are you gonna do then? Give them a little bit of Democracy?
DEMOCRACY is what we have bestowed upon Iraq. It is also what we have here at home. Have a look at some Iraqi DEMOCRACY!
Among the ruins, the unemployed Iraqi shares a single room with 13 members of his family.
Everybody says you can’t enjoy FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY without a free and aggressive press corps. And rightly so.
THE PRESS tells us what’s going on in the world. We cannot do a good job as informed citizens unless our press does a good job of being aggressive in the search for truth. Is that what’s happening at the moment? Have a look at what’s going on in the world of THE PRESS.
Reporters Without Borders (RWB) said on Tuesday that press freedom “remains just a frustrated hope in Africa”, and “informing the public in North Africa, the Middle East and Iran is a very risky business”.
The Paris-based organisation also said that many Asian journalists have been reduced to “propaganda”.
Oh yeah? Wonder what parts of Asia they are thinking of!
Does it ever!!
Among other things, it means you have to go to sites like Aljazeera to get news and information unfiltered through rose-colored glasses.
But there’s a bonus, because once you get past the idea that somehow there’s something shameful or unpatriotic about reading news of the Middle East that actually comes from the Middle East, you will find that Aljazeera’s coverage is not nearly as radical as the American mass-hypnosis media would like you to believe. [More on that in another installment, maybe.] In addition, there’s almost always a link to an insightful essay by Scott Ritter.
Ritter’s newest piece is called “Dereliction of duty regarding Iraq” and you can read it on Aljazeera as well. Just click here.
The American press and punditry, intimidated and compensated into slavishly reporting on Iraq solely along lines that will not overly alienate them from the powers that be inside the administration of George Bush, have long ago foregone drawing comparisons between the ongoing conflict in Iraq and the one America lost in Southeast Asia some three decades in the past.
The lack of a basis for direct comparison makes accomplishing the denigration of any such correlation between conflicts all-too-easy for the uninformed consumer of what passes for “news” in America today: the terrain is different, the scale of violence is different, the Cold War is over, and, of course, everything changed after 9/11.
Recently, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard Myers, insisted, at a press conference, that the US and coalition forces were winning the war in Iraq, and noted that he was confident of a military victory.
You may ask yourself: Why should we have to rely on a foreign news service for coverage like this? And the answer of course is that we shouldn’t!!
And in fact we don’t, not really, not if we can read between the lines. Here, look at some of what CNN had on their site today:
This appears to contradict statements made last week by the president in his news conference, according to the CNN article.
Bush said he asked the general, “Do you feel that we’ve limited our capacity to deal with other problems because of our troop levels in Iraq?
“And the answer is, no, he doesn’t feel we’re limited,” Bush said.
In other words, the supposedly all-powerful USA is getting its reality-based ass kicked in Iraq but its faith-based leadership is too deluded to admit it. Or to let dissenting opinions stand.
Scott Ritter may think “Vietnam” when he sees all this happening; but a different word comes to my mind: “Madness!” In some ways — and in this context — I suppose the two words mean the same thing…
It’s almost too surreal to believe. But I am not making this up. It’s coming from all over the place. And how could these sources be any more different? Scott Ritter is using plain English when he says “This looks just like Vietnam”. And CNN is being a bit more subtle about it. But once you get past the differences in style, you’ll see that they’re both telling us the same story.
Such is the role of the PRESS in an age of FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY.

Excellent blog, WP.
How long will it take for the news to leak out to the people in this country who depend on the US media?
Thanks for providing the snippets, since I’m having trouble connecting with nearly every news site on the Internetsss today. Actually for about a week. :looks over her shoulder:
I don’t know, WP. Al Jazeera has some glaring blind spots. No mention of Georgia’s "runaway bride," no interest in Michael Jackson, absolutely NO time for Brad Pitt and his latest squeeze. Makes you wonder about priorities.
Hear! Hear!

Sometimes I feel like I’m living in some kind of parallel world. It’s often hard to believe how little most people know about what’s really happening in the world. Since the 11/04 election disaster, I have started getting most of my news from the internet and stopped paying much attention to most of the fluff in the MSM and even to most professional sports. What seems important to me and the things that I’ve learned about that are not in the mainstream media have increasingly started to create a gap between me and many of the people I talk with, including, sometimes, even my relatives who are generally pretty liberal (at least on my side) but get virtually all of their info from the MSM. I try to tell them about the things I’ve heard about- the 911 conspiracy, election fraud, Clint Curtis-Ray Lemme and they may seem interested but not enough to convince them to look beyond the MSM for real information. Today, I went to get my hair cut by the same guy who has been cutting it for something like 15 years. He’s a nice guy, reasonably open-minded although a conservative at heart. We usually find a lot to talk about but when I started talking about this stuff today I could tell he thought I’d gone off the deep end. Same thing with my cousin who is a conservative and works for Morgan Stanley and has handled most of my investments for years. When I told him I wanted to get out of many of my investments because of who and what they supported, and tried to explain to him why, he just thought I was crazy and I subsequently learned he had called another member of my family to make sure I wasn’t going through "some kind of crisis". In a way, I guess I am. It’s called the Bush Administration. They say ignorance is bliss. Perhaps, more than that, information or knowledge seems to be scary to most of us. People just don’t want to accept that individuals and institutions they were taught to believe in could be as evil as would have to be the case if what they were to believe what they are hearing. I’m not sure what the answer is, especially when the mainstream press seems to be so hopelessly lost.
Thanks, Tom.
re #5: That’s a great post, Steve. It’s really a tough problem, isn’t it? Are you going through a crisis or is the whole country? Or maybe the whole world?
There is so much knowledge [of news, recent history, even ancient history] that has been suppressed, because it doesn’t resonate with the standard antiseptic mainstream hypnosis view of the world. And once you start to let some of that stuff "contaminate" your world-view, things can be very unsettled for a long time. We’ve all gone through that, all the regulars here, I mean, and most more than once, I would imagine. It’s a scary time and for a while it seems like you’re getting alienated from all your friends and family, but [in my experience anyway] the alienation fades away bit by bit and after a while you find that you can talk about certain things with certain people, and once you start doing that, you can gradually widen the boundaries of your discussions [with some of them] until in effect you will be bringing them through the same scary unsettling stuff that you have been going through yourself recently. It’s not always possible and it’s icky at the best of times.
But what’s the alternative? Do you suddenly forget about the things that are in the forefront of your thoughts every day? Do you pretend not to know the most important things you have recently learned? How?
I don’t have too many answers but I do recognize bullshit when I see it and I refuse to give up. We shall know the truth and the truth shall set us free. Even if it has to come from Aljazeera.
I went into meltdown yesterday. I just couldn’t think straight and just wanted to go to bed for the next few years. I mean, what with dealing with my home life (not bad, just busy) and then try to deal with all of the problems going on in our local govt (missing treasurer, missing money, mafia type stuff, etc. ) and then to see all of the stuff going on in the Bush world – I just felt small, ineffective, hopeless and lost. I mean, how to juggle being useful on all those levels. There is so much wrong and it seems so hard to juggle it all to try and make a difference. My friends and family use to joke about me being Super Mom. Constantly on the move and trying to save the world at the same time. But I’m not Super Mom. I don’t have a cape. But I am one voice – and I will use it. I woke up today with a renewed conviction. I will do all that I can to change things. I face myself in the mirror each morning and tell myself:
"Today I will do all that I can do to be a good mom, a good wife, a good friend, a good person and I will do all I can do to make this world a better place."
Regardless that my family mostly thinks I’m nuts. They are all mostly either uninterested or very conservative. You should see our family dinners when we all go home for get togethers. There are so many taboo topics, you would think all we ever talk about is the weather. We don’t talk religion, we don’t talk politics, we don’t talk about voting. How can they sit there and not care? But that’s okay too. I know the truth and I won’t give up. You are right, WP – the truth shall set us free.
Peace to all – we can make a difference.
To Steve #5 I seem to be in the same boat as you. My family thinks I’m nuts and I guess in a way I am. Ever since the election I’ve pulled my head out of my ass and have sought as much info as possible.Lets face it theres a lot out there. I’m on the other side of the chair, been a hairdresser for thirty years,I’ve been talking to people just so that they will have the desire to at least look for info on their own.I feel like I’m hitting a BIG BRICK WALL! I was talking to two of my favorite clients last night and tried to point out that the runaway bride story was just a distraction so they would not think about the war in Iraq.I was absoloutly astounded when they both said they hadn’t even thought about the war since it had started!!!!! I am appalled!!!!! I have two children both over the age of consent and am so worried about the stuff I read about the draft! When will people wake up! I can only pray it will be soon before all is lost to this corrupt government who is ruining our country.I hate to say this but I don’t see the Dems as any better then the repugs! Keep plugging away,If you only affect 1 in 10 I feel it is worth it! Remember there are a lot of us we just have to be more VOCAL!
Oh, Steve –
Join the club! And welcome home!!!
BTW and in addition –
Link TV broadcasts "Mosaic," a compendium of Middle Eastern broadcast news which won the 2004 Peabody Award, every weekday at 10:30 AM Eastern ST. Lots of truly "unbiased," factual reporting on the mess in Iraq, among other things.
Great article. As you know AlJazeera is under attack – they have had staff murdered, offices bombed, bureaus shutdown and currently are facing a regional advertising boycott.
We’re trying to set up a grassroots movement to lobby for free speech – check out (and join up) http://www.friendsofaljazeera.org if you’d like to continue seeing an alternate voice!
What WP #10 said!
Shadowtwinchaos #11 We are with you! I hope the bu$hit gang wakes up one morning with a "new conviction" … if you know what I mean …
shadow, steve and all:
It sucks when I read all the info on the net and try to just get my family/friends to look it up. Decide for themselves.
My closest sister/friend said when I asked her what she thought about Congress cutting benefits for Vets (my son is Nat’l Guard), "I bet you think Clinton is god".
I haven’t been for Clinton since he said he didn’t inhale.
Onward Non, Semi, Pseudo Christian Soldiers!! Whatever

Peg- Thanks, Some days as I sit at my terminal I just feel desolate about the road this country is on.For so many years I was too busy living and raising my kids. Now I just wish I could do more.I come here every day to read the words you all write and I feel that at least you all understand, that we are in this fight together.I was so hopeful when Rep Conyers had the hearings in Ohio, but then there was no coverage by the media.Same with the electoral college objection by Senator Boxer.I was so jubilant, and then again no coverage.I am happy I know whats really happening but also very discouraged at the same time. So as I start my days reading my news to find out the truth I just pray that the lord is hearing us and will help people wake up and smell the bullshit in this country!Wasn’t really surprised when I heard the British consulate got hit this morning, falling polling numbers, time to scare the sheeple back into submission. I also have to say I thank God for the internet,my kids pushed me into getting it(Love those kids).I spend much more time on sites like this then even turning the boob tube on anymore.Except for C-Span,Great channel! Have you all noticed how much our elected officials don’t work? Sorry for the rant but Thank You Brad for making it at least possible to rant to people who understand!
I’m planning to visit my mother in New Jersey sometime soon. She told me I’m not allowed to talk politics!
Haha…I’m bringing flyers with me to spread about…on the stolen election info & 9/11….
Rock on, Joan! Good luck!!
It seems to me that the bu$hit doctrine is to call global militancy "democracy" and "freedom". Raw Story has an article that says the US military expenditures will soon match the rest of the world combined (link here).
The bu$hit doctrine sees "freedom" as unfettered military might and the right to invade or strike with nukes or whatever anywhere and anytime he can work up a lie to cover the underlying intentions.
Meanwhile the rest of the world knows this and they are reacting accordingly.
The MSM fails to inform the US public that they are no longer welcome in the world by an incredibly large and growing number of people.
Today’s lead question in the CNN poll is, "Should the person who found a severed finger inside a pile of custard be required to return it? Yes or no."
These are the same folks we’re counting on to report malfeasances inside our elected (sic) government. Uh…no, don’t think that will happen.
