Brad, I really appreciate your picking up this story – Latoyia’s only one of many, but it’s time we called out the media ratings whores and hypocrites for what they are.
I’m not finished with this story yet, by any means. Until Nancy Grace gets something on her show about Latoyia, I’m going to keep pounding.
It just shows how shallow and stupid the news is. After all these cases, they still only pick young hot white women.
So I sent Ms. grace a note.

Black infant Sun Hudson had his breathing tube in Texas pulled to save the hospital money, and he died, the same week Terry Shiavo had her life support pulled. NOT ON TV! No comments from any Republicans about Sun Hudson. No emergency meetings called by Republicans.

Nihilism is an indulgence and renders the nihilist impotent in any historical movement. The nihilist is a great friend of oppressors, oligarchs, plutocrats. It is one citizen they don’t have to worry much about.
History is real and ongoing. Things change. It is easy to get caught up in the dreamland of permanence, but it’s not real as any study of history will show. (Don’t buy the cop-out "end of history" crap.) Be part of the change. It’s real life and it’s work.
Anyway…if you have a moral nature *act* from it. If you are an American, *act* like an American. Don’t be a friend of the criminals and their toadies in power.
Update: CNN Headline News actually had a short segment on this around noon. The problem with it is that they raised a cautious eyebrow, referring to her "boyfriend" as the father of her unborn child and backhandedly raising the question of whether she might have run away voluntarily by gratuitously saying that "friends and family" state it would be out of character for her to leave her 7-year-old daughter.

For a story to make news, it must meet at least one of three criterias. I cannot remember all three but the main one is:
1. Unusual
I think another one is number of victums and lastly, the person (famous or not).
OJ fit all three catagories.
A kid getting kidnapped in Utah meets the "unusual" criteria.
There are tons of people missing and killed and you never hear about them. You can’t. It’s impossible. The people are not famous and it is not unusual.

In the Shiavo case, the parents wanted to take care of her while the husband was already living with another lady and had two kids with her. It was in his best interest for her to be dead, especially financially. I thought you guys were against the death penalty. You guys are hypocrites.

After the Schiavo circus, my 80 yr. old dad insisted I find a legal living will for him to sign because he is adamant about never having this happen to him and his family due to interference by strangers who call themselves "protectors."

Oh Karla – Will you quit obsessing about our IQs and speak about the issues? (Well, no, I guess you won’t.) What do you think about this "missing white woman" issue? Do you think there is a problem? I do.
Personally, I think it is clear marker of a class issue perpetrated by the court followers (MS/corporate media) of wealth and power who make up the core of a clear plutocratic ruling class. A person has to be in or somehow related to a certain set of circumstances to become the the focus of one of the hysterical "news"episodes. (It is not entirely – though largely – racial, but it definitely class-related when not entirely politically motivated. It might be worth analyzing the nature of these "episodes" themselves – why the hysteria, why the obsession?) Life goes on punctuated by these strange peaks of anxiety (always basically the same). Karla – I don’t particularly expect you or others here to agree with me, But your views on the matter would be welcome, I believe. It’s just so difficult to get to them.
(I’m talking to the wrong person, of course. Karla doesn’t think we should even talk about it, I think. She doesn’t seem to think we should discuss, much less do something about anything. I perhaps jumped to the conclusion that her basic outlook was nihilistic. Some of her postings would indicate it.)
Karla, if you would like to debate nihilism and its relation to politics, I will be glad to accomodate you – assuming you are able to tolerate my slow-wittedness – but I assume that an honest nihilist would consider it futile, although possibly a diversion in the bleak landscape of life.
It could be called "literary racial profiling." If an African American girl ran away just before her wedding, the media wouldn’t give it a second thought. If she was an African American from Alabama who was kidnapped to Aruba, likewise.
O.J. Simpson is a bad example. His case became a cause celebre because he was a CELEBRITY. The fact that he was black and his ex-wife was white merely added to the drama, especially because she might have "cheated" on him with a white guy.
Brad is right…a black kidnapping or murder victim (or runaway bride) wouldn’t make the news unless the antagonist was A FAMOUS WHITE PERSON. And in that case, white conservatives would attack the media for liberal bias. White victims preserve the double standard.
#16 RLM – You are certainly correct. I would also add that here is an element – what should we call it? – of "potential celebrity". I read an "Onion" satire some time ago – I can’t seem to pick it up on the ‘net – that was on the mark and quite disturbing about a hypothetical very plain white girl from a blue-collar family who was kidnapped and murdered and it was non-news. As all the "Onion’ pieces, it was like a news story and all the people quoted in the article were things like, "Nobody really cares", "She just didn’t make the grade, never could have been Miss whatever…" basically – "Let’s get back to the world of celebrity salacious hysteria. This real world of human beings is just so dull."

In speaking of ethnic groups, I certainly don’t want to leave out Asians, Hispanics and others who are largely outside the feverish world of white celebrity. My main point is that it is the old class/wealth/racist hypocrisy is going strong, exemplified by corporate media and focused in a small group who control the wealth of the nation and to whom class has trumped patriotism, inclusiveness, and democracy.
The only thing I’m wondering is "Why the surprise?"

If they wanted too. If I had a living will, then no. Shiavo did not have a living will and you are only taking her husband’s words as the truth.

Republicans care about "life." There would have been no problems if she had a living will. It appears this was tantamount to the death penalty of an innocent person.

I don’t the words "stranger protectors" ran though his head in the decision making process. Every one should have a living will. Do you have one?
