Rove gave this speech today to the Republican Nation Committee. The speech suggests strategy and talking points that will be used by RNC candidates and operatives in preparation for the 2006 elections.

Rove’s tone is more moderated than in the past. We suspect that this is due to a variety of mounting troubles for the GOP along with waning public support. Republicans will want to project positive perception of their candidates while again using ‘Swift Boat’ tactics for the negative attacks.

UPDATE FROM BRAD: I’ll somewhat disagree with the good David Edwards, only to say (at least from the clip posted) it doesn’t seem that Rove has “moderated” much. He continues to smash up Democrats with the same misleading and factually incorrect horseshit that he (and Bush and Cheney) have been using for quite a while. Including the inaccurate characterization of scores of Democratic Party positions. Will the “Uniting, Not Dividing” ever stop?!

And, on one more thought, he talks about the remarkable economy of 2005. Bad timing, I guess, since the Dow just plummetted 213 points today, wiping out most of the gains from 2005 in a single day.

UPDATE: New York Times article:

In Preview of G.O.P. Campaign, Rove Tears Into Democrats

WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 – Karl Rove, the president’s chief political adviser, gave nervous Republicans here a preview of the party’s strategy to maintain its dominance in the fall elections today, assailing Democrats for their positions on terrorism, the White House eavesdropping program and Mr. Bush’s attempt to shape the federal judiciary.

For 26 minutes, after calling for civility in politics in a packed speech before the Republican National Committee, Mr. Rove offered a lacerating attack on Democrats that other Republicans said was a road map for how the party would deal with a tough electoral environment. Mr. Rove sharply criticized Democrats for their opposition to tax cuts and Mr. Bush’s Supreme Court nominations, but he left little doubt that once again – as has been the case in both national elections since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks – that he was intent on making national security the pre-eminent issue in 2006.

Mr. Rove speeches this early in an election year have proved to be accurate predictors of what Republican candidates would say in the fall, and thus every seat in the ballroom at a downtown Washington hotel was filled. He lacerated Democrats for what he described their “cut and run” policy on Iraq, for blocking a renewal of the broad antiterrorism law known as the USA Patriot Act, and for challenging the legality of the administration’s widespread use of warrantless wiretaps in the face of widespread criticism.

Mr. Rove was mostly optimistic about his party’s prospects at a meeting in which some Republicans have expressed concern about the political environment Republican candidates might be running in, pointing to the war in Iraq, high gas prices and the investigations. “The G.O.P.’s progress during the last four years is a stunning political achievement,” he said.

    Abramoff.

But listen to the end of Rove’s talk. Taxes. That’s all these shitbags care about. Cut my taxes, don’t want to pay for education. Cut my taxes, don’t want to pay for healthcare. Cut my taxes, don’t want pay for job training programs. Cut my taxes, don’t want to pay for environmental safeguards. Cut my taxes, don’t want to pay for THIS WAR.

People suffer and die daily because of these fuckers. And yet half of America still waves its flag and says "we’re free". AND they have the gall to claim some kind of moral superiority. Christians?!? My ass, and if they ARE, then fuck Christianity.

I guess jolly old Fitzmas, must have eaten the milk and cookies and then gone home….never hear much about Plamegate, or Phase Two….the American people surly are like little children with unbelievably short attention spans…soon we will have machine gun Alito…goodbye Democracy…we will become a fascist corporate dictatorship..complete with spying..(thought police) rot in prison..( not charged, no legal council, maybe shipped off to some gulug in a foriegn country for "rendition"….the "enemy combatant" can be applied to American citizens, (especially if they show signs of dissent..remember Padilla?)..I wonder how many of our Constitutional rights the batty right wingers will give up to feel "safe"..and after they have given up all their Constitutional rights, their bill of freedom, their equality, (even during the first and second WW, during Korea, during Viet Nam, the "cold war" we weren’t asked to give up our Constitutional rights, (although it was tried)….will they finally figure out that they sold out, the real enemy is themselves, and their government that they condoned, enabled and allowed to take away every right, that our soldiers gave their lives to protect?
Looking back through history, during every "national security threat" this country has been through, it would appear that the more powerful, the elite, the government have been in a relentless drive to grab more power than what the Constitution allows them, even though when they are sworn in it is the Constitution they promised to protect…and the systematically try to find ways to "get around" or "get rid of the parts of the Constitution they don’t like..(like freedom of speech, right to privacy..but mostly take away the "power of the people" that hire them, set themselves up as Kings and Dictators..and this particular administration is the worst I have ever seen….the scary part is that it looks like this time we have enough people so full of hate and so scared, they have lost all ability to reason, just want to hide under the bed and give their lives, the lives of their loved ones, and their "security" over to some one who will think for them, and treat them as the "unwashed masses" only good for indentured servitude, slavery, and canon fodder.

More garbage and bullshit Rove… That was a profoundly stupid idea.

It’s time to drive a stake through the end of the neocon voting machine enterprise….obviously Rove, you’ll always cheat and smear.

That’s the republican MO after the neocon takeover. So its time to take you to the task, have Fitzgerald drag your ass down, and all of us pile it up.

One question. Why is this lying murderer with his master plan of electronic vote rigging telling anyone what should be? Because he’s preaching his crooked cross damage control stance to bunch of corrupt sellout lepers whose days are numbered. Go on and spread your lies about the war in Iraq and blame the taps on 9/11 you frigin ruster. If you win, the revolution is gonna put your head on a stick Porky. I bet you thought Americans could be controlled with fear and media deception indefinitely U fat fck? Next time you get together with Mr. No bid contracts "Hal" Cheney, tell him you want to have better execution of future war games on US soil than what occured on 9/11/2001 (no whistleblowers required). "Strategy" for the 2006 elections??? They don’t need a strategy. As Chris Floyd said in his latest Moscow Times piece, despite scandals and all-time low approval ratings, they’ll win.

Thank you, Diebold, et.al. The dictatorship is almost complete. Now they can start to fill all those newly refurbished and refenced "detention facilities" (4000 of them) around the country.

I’m with you, Brad. Although I would have to say that, while I agree that the economy of 2005 was remarkable, I’d have to fine tune that sentiment a bit to match my observations and feelings on it…what’s remarkable is the fact that the dollar is even able to buy so much as a single post-it note anymore, given all the shielding, sheltering, bracing and buttressing (and when all else fails, cooking of the national "books"–hey, where d’ya think the ol’ boys at Enron, et al learned to do it?) that is being done to our economy. That is, when all the hemming and hedging and coercing and cheating to maintain anything resembling a crumb of the overall world market share in any viable sector has pissed enough of the right people off and we have to play nice to keep from anyone actually doing anything to counter our arrogance…so we shut our eyes real tight and cross our fingers for another spell as we drift untethered in the big scary world market and do everything we can to our own economy to keep it from reflecting the fact that we can’t buy shit with our own currency any more.

It all comes down to this: Natural systems (meaning both those that are an a confluent aspect of nature itself and those that are vast interconnections implemented as a result of natural tendencies and inclinations of entities within a given sector or demographic of nature–e.g. markets) naturally maintain equilibrium. There is some chaos theory and statistics, etc. not worth getting into involved, but overall, nature is ruled 100% by the concept of balance, NO MATTER WHAT. Take any random event with multiple possibilities for outcome, or end result…chart the results of several occurances of said event…it will always, however roughly, resemble a bell with the outcome occurring with highest frequency at the peak and all other results falling away in both directions as their frequency decreases from that peak. EVERYTHING BALANCES ITSELF OUT. A system may, at times, look bad, but rest assured that it will get better, if left alone to its own laws. And as the line of time grows longer and longer, all the dips and peaks blur and fade into one single solitary line running straight down the middle. It is UNIVERSAL. What goes up must come down. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

    AHA!

But here’s the corollary: In a complex, and therefore unpredictable, system (e.g.: a market), since it is an inconceivably vast and intricate network of connections and associations, some so small as to be entirely imperceptible, if you institute ANY change to ANY part of that system, no matter how seemingly small or remote, you set of a spiderweb of change that only gets noisier, more chaotic, and therefore catalystic as it spreads. Non-linear mathematics. No way of predicting how small or unbelievably universal the changes in the system will be at the outcome, but you can bet your sweet ass that one thing is true: it will all be balanced overall.

We’ve been on a market system that tries to play god with itself for about 100 years now, and every second has been a tightrope walk. The only way our system has not collapsed, is by VAST manipulation of the numbers to make everything appear OK on the bottom line. Postal cost is a good even scale to guage it by, since the postal system is a vastly tight, efficient ship with virtually no new costs from year to year that are not balanced out in many other ways. (IE:adjusted to compensate for more complex means of conveyance, etc. and increased efficiency and productivity in industrial sectors, greater supply availability, etc., it costs almost exactly the same amount to mail a letter today, what it cost in 1786, relative to the surrounding market(s). AD 1786: it cost ten cents to mail a one page letter in the US. AD 1886: the price had vastly decreased to two cents. (Our economy had come into its own and its monetary unit had increased in value…two pennies would actually get you something then–it was WORTH something!) Alright, now look at AD 1986: the price had multiplied a staggering 1200% to 24 cents. Now look at the last 20 years: it now costs 39 cents to mail a letter. Its rate of increase is vastly increasing…! But wait! I just said that it costs virtually the same amount to provide the service now as it did 220 years ago, the value of the dollar is just depleating that astronomically and quickly, so more units of our money are needed to get the same service. Wrap your mind around that rate of decrease if you can…it’s UGLY, to say the least. That tightrope gets more and more wobbly by the second, and it WILL collapse… sometime. (Tomorrow? Two years hence? Who knows? No one. *Friendly Tip*: Invest in GOLD. It’s the only sure thing, has been for millenia so far, and its value will only INCREASE as the bottom falls out of all your stocks, bonds, futures, speculatives, etc., etc., etc. I sure do miss the gold standard…)

Jeff said on 1/20/2006 @ 5:24pm PT: [Permalink]

Oh, and one more thing to add to my last, seemingly infinite (sorry:-p), comment: The fact that any gains whatsoever came out of 2005 on the bottom line, given the hellishly gruesome year that it was for several industries that play a major role in keeping the Amerikan Demokratik wheels oiled, tells me EXACTLY why it was necessary to raise the price of postage (yet again!) to kick off 2006. It also tells me that the price will probably not have a chance to be bumped up again, since there’s no need when the bottom falls out of the system and the excrement hits the air conditioner…GOLD, people! (…and guns…)

    Ya can’t say I didn’t warn ya…

Jeff: Agreed re: Gold. But get it in your hand, stuff it in your shoe, sew it into the lining of your underwear. I cashed out all my IRA today. Oh well, I pay the 10% on the profit, but I’m skipping the country come summer and investment means NOTHING to me now. Hopefully the market won’t have turned to entire shit by summer because as soon as the school year ends and I quit my current job I’m cashing out 7 years worth of retirement also. Once again, I’ll get hit for the tax, but what the hell. I’m willing to believe, at this point, that a market paradigm shift is going to occur and I’d rather be on the crest of that wave than pounded by the surf. How much gold do they let you buy – what’s the cap?

I hope Rove gets roasted on a spit with an apple in his fucking pig mouth. (NSA: that was a metaphor, don’t come and take me away pretty please.) He and Cheney are out making their speeches, I can’t figure out who to hate more of the two (screw you trolls, yes I HATE.) And yes, I think the Osama tape is bullshit. What the fuck, this guy is dragging a dialysis machine through the Khyber Pass or something? Osama is the boogeyman, and they will never catch him – they never wanted to in the first place. He’s the recurring weapon of mass distraction while they plunder resources, subvert democracies worldwide (Venezuela, et al), and flush our real freedoms down the crapper.

I believe the balance is shifting and the pendulum will swing back towards real democracy, but there will be a whole lot of destruction in its wake.

"When Bill Clinton was looking to fill that vacancy, he was in dialogue with Orrin Hatch, the Republican leader on the Senate Judiciary Committee," Durbin said. "He brought him several names that Hatch rejected. He said, ‘Don’t send those to me — I can’t get ’em through.’ And then Bill Clinton came up with the name of Ruth Bader Ginsberg. And Hatch said, ‘I can support her. The Republicans can support her.’ A dramatic difference from where we are today."

I’ve taken the advice of a friend of mine & added a signature statement to all of my outgoing messages, demanding that bush & cheney resign because they have betrayed their country.

If they’re reading our emails, might as well talk to them directly. Why waste such an opportunity?

Republicans get into trouble when they tell the American people what the American people want. They do much better when they tell the American people what they, the Republicans, want to do.

George H.W. Bush ran for re-election in 1992. After promising not to raise taxes in 1988 ("Read my lips") he did exactly that, then told the American people in 1992 that the issues were "taxes and trust." He kept repeating, ungrammatically, "Who do you trust?" It was the wrong message, and Bush, Sr. couldn’t understand that he was the worst possible messenger besides, since he had failed to keep a promise not to raise taxes.

The issues weren’t taxes and trust. He just tried to tell people they were. He lost. Reagan’s approach had been different; he didn’t tell people what they were most concerned about, he told them what he was most concerned about…getting government off our backs, basically. Rightly or wrongly, he won.

Rove is now telling us that the 2006 elections will be about security. He wants us to think that, not because it’s true (Osama bin Laden is still wandering around, our borders aren’t secure, and we can’t even defend ourselves from hurricanes), but because the memory of 9/11 still resonates and because Bush’s highest ratings have always been in the area of "standing up to terrorists."

As usual, Rove is all about winning elections, by hook or by crook. He’s not about integrity, or public service, or good government. Fortunately, people have caught on to Rove by now.

You don’t need a strategy if you have the machines. I think Brad should go on a mission to post the pre-election polls until we’re sick of it, so when we see the "swings" from the pre-election polls to the "final count" (wink wink), we’ll all know in real time, and now months or years from now, all the "impossible results".

Brad, I don’t know if you have the means to do it, but that would be a good idea. Especially the Santorum/Casey election. The GOP seems to win 51%-49% after exit polls show they lost, in key races. The operative word is "key races." It would be too obvious if someday they had 100-0 in the Senate. The GOP’s mission is just to have enough to stop fillibusters. What is that, 60-40 or 67-33???

The Santorum election is a "key election" in my opinion. Key elections are ones the GOP must have, because it makes them look bad if they lose. Santorum is the 3rd highest ranking GOP Senator, so that would be an embarrassing blow for him to lose to Casey by double-digits, like the pre-election polls are now showing.

The Schmidt-Hackett race was a key one for the GOP to steal (51-49, btw), because an anti-War Iraq War vet defeating a Republican in a heavy Republican precinct would be highly embarrassing.

big dan said on 1/21/2006 @ 10:43am PT: [Permalink]

Of course, the most key election of all to steal is the presidential election, because he gets to pick (we don’t elect) a shitload of cabinet members and committe leaders. These unelected positions were filled by neo-cons. That is why we’re in the boat we’re in.

So many excellent posts here, nothing much to add.
I don’t, however, believe the that ‘national security’ was ever really an agenda. I believe 911 was an inside job, thus why spend Halliburtons money money to ‘protect’ America. The lack of any interest in implementing any suggestions of the ‘911 fraud committee’ proves this point to me as well as the endless information that has come out since then. The web is full of documention, the video’s are available, the stock market told the story, people were silenced, all having to do with 911. The people were manipulated to believe that LIE and the majority still do. I chuckled when I heard about OBL AGAIN. The cabal in DC do live in their world of delusion and they fear us. We are the ones that recognize the Lie and they are doing their best to keep repeating it over and over…a deranged mantra, if you will. Homeland security is only a guise to take away our freedoms, it has little to do with 911, why should it, when the event was planned by the very neocons running this country.

I was particularly interested how this new video came to be. I have since realized it was not a video at all, but an audio tape. Throw in a few old pictures of OBL and the story gets twisted and people think, he is alive, and some new video has been released that PROVES it. The devil incarnate is indeed alive and resides in DC, in Our
    House.

I agree with the posters here who have referenced the pendulum swing, and thown in bits and pieces of chaos theory. There is afterall, order in chaos. We don’t recognize it because we have been taught otherwise. Many in our scientific community are recognizing this now and have become bolder in their attempt to get this info into the mainstream. Chaos theory is indeed a math based science and time is not linear as we have been taught to believe. The books are and have been written to expose the outdated view of the world we have been forcefed since we were babes. This kind of thinking is a threat to the power elite.

Rove’s agenda is keep the box shut and taped. Let not one of his followers escape…for to be outside the box is a threat to the NWO and their Lies about the reality in which we partake. Soon the shift (paradigm) will have taken hold and those of us that care, will know, those that don’t are destined to live in their reality and reap the benefits of the government they so staunchly support. The House GOP, for its bold, yet transitional easing into campaign finance and lobbyist reform.

Bill Frist and Tom DeLay for taking proactive steps to promote capitalism.

Deborah Howell, for rewriting the ombudsman job description and its very definition.

Dick Cheney, for telling Osama bin Laden and the peace process, “Go fuck yourself!”

Frank Abramoff, for demonstrating that a father’s love can be blinder than Ray Charles in a dark room.

And the Dept. of Homeland Security, for ensuring that the terrorists will never win if they bomb our liquor stores and donut shops.

All this and much, much more!

The republicans will be sorely punished in November for listening to Karl "Jack Abramoff" Rove and allowing the congress to die.

They murdered an institution which was to be the soul of the people. Instead it is the soul of corruption. On their watch. Now. This year.

When you rob a bank and assert a defense that "other people rob banks too", you get extra time (as in a larger prison sentence). Time to get a clue.

They have robbed the bank and asserted the defense that "others did it too" and therefore qualify for ejection from office in November.

    Just do it America.
