Before I register my complaint here with Matt Taibbi’s otherwise excellent article on the background of “Mr. Republican” Jack Abramoff and “The secret history of the most corrupt man in Washington,” as published in the April 6th edition of Rolling Stone, I’ll point to this smart graf amongst many such smart grafs in a very well-researched and informative piece:
Taibbi’s piece covers in detail some of the many scams that Abramoff and the rest of the nationwide Republican Network of dishonest, opportunistic players who now comprise the power structure of the Republican party — or the “vast rightwing conspiracy” as Hillary correctly described it. It’s an ugly, but accurate portrait of those who have hijacked all that America was supposed to have stood for while an otherwise distracted and/or media-whipped public was trained to look the other way — or otherwise give the benefit of the doubt to some very very bad guys who have earned no such benefit.
Those bad guys now run the country, its government, its corporations and its media virtually in its entirety. And more shamefull still, they’ve got goons played for suckers who are so daft and gullible that, to this day, they run around and play apologist for these people who — I guess they don’t realize it — are fucking them hard up their own asses with their own hard-earned money and blindly offered good-will. You’ll find many of those dopes repeating Fox “News” and Limbaugh-isms over Thanksgiving dinners everywhere, and otherwise plying their foolish and self-destructive trade wherever they can. A stroll through some of the most trollish comments left here at The BRAD BLOG reveals these people have left only the dimmest of connections to Reality as it exists in 2006 on the planet Earth.
With those accolades for Taibbi’s work now out of the way, allow me to point to this earlier graf in his piece (emphasis added)…
“Lurking in the background” must be MSM code for: Reported by BRAD BLOG but otherwise ignored.
We’re glad to see Taibbi pick up on some of our reporting as he writes…
…But it would certainly help to keep such bad guys from affecting so much corruption and damage for so many years before they actually get busted, if Taibbi would be kind enough to point out some of the sources — independent, alternative, “blog” or otherwise — who have been trying to blow such whistles for so long.
With appropriate credit and recognition from the mainstream, as we opined a several weeks ago, reporting such as ours and many others would likely have the effect of stopping the bad guys before they manage to wreak quite as much havoc on our once-great American democracy.
We’d hope that even the usually independent-minded Rolling Stone would keep such important points in mind by choosing to give appropriate attribution where possible in their future reporting. As we’ve said before: It matters.

It might be okay to require that sources have all the badges, bells and whistles before deeming them worthy of attribution, if the badges, bells and whistles themselves were assurance of the veracity of such sources’ claims, but, clearly, that is not the case nowadays. In fact, many of us have to be suspicious of most of what we find in the MSM. It seems to me, Brad, that you have shown your seriousness and credibility often enough to automatically deserve attribution. Does a press pass get you anywhere with these people?
You know you ain’t gonna git nuthin from them Brad, otherwise they might have to pay you, or it will make blogging legit
Keep on truckin bro with the pittance you get from us for now, maybe later it will pay off
Connect the dots. Connect the dots. Connect the dots.
Just send Mr. Taibbi a pleasant email telling him how much you liked his article, link him to this particular post on BradBlog, and ask for an amended attribution in the online version of "Rolling Stone." If he’s an ethical person, he’ll do so, or at least explain why not.
If there’s no response, take the advice of an earlier commentor. Let’s just say, "Fuck the corporate thieves and let’s do our own thing. They’re the dinosaurs."
I have been waiting for the moment the Abramoff would be implicated in the Election Fraud crises of the past 6 years!! Jaysus…you thought the definition of "Must-see TV" was going to change with the myriad scandals the GOP has perpetrated…we had the popcorn ready…?!?! But this…this could be the big enchilada!! Not as big as tying HW to the Kennedy assasination, but damn close!!
How did you get that from the R. Stone article?!?! I totally missed that…may have been late…
Thanks Brad!!

Excellent, Brad. Insightful, about the trolls who are not based in reality, that defend criminals and don’t answer the many, many contradictions and lies put forth by Bush, when asked. The trolls are silent when confronted with a question like this: "How do you resolve Bush’s claims to promote democracy in the middle east, and then when the Palestinians elect their leaders in a free, democratic vote, Bush cuts off aid to them?" Trolls, since they are not based in reality, simply don’t answer questions like this. And how come Bush wants the elected Iraqi prime minister to step down? Isn’t that the point, he claims we are there to bring democracy??? Blatant contradictions like this, and there are many, receive no answer from trolls. They try to frame what is talked about on your blog, but they can’t. Because it’s not Rush Limbaugh’s blog, or some other "group think" blog not based in reality.
Hmmmm…I feel an email to Matt Taibbi coming on…any of you other 6 or 7 feeling the urge?
Thank you for referring to Reality with a capital R, which is the least that it deserves.

WASHINGTON – A batch of 278 e-mails between lobbyist Jack Abramoff and a Bush administration official show a highly inappropriate relationship where gifts and business interests mixed freely and frequently, federal prosecutors said Friday.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/electionfraud2004/
What I want to see is the emails between Abramoff and Jeb Bush in regards to the theft of the elections of 2000 and 2004!!!!
The prosecutors hope to use the e-mails in the criminal case against David Safavian, who is accused of lying and obstruction of justice in connection with investigations of an Abramoff-sponsored golf outing to Scotland in August 2002.
The e-mails show that Abramoff and Safavian, then chief of staff at the General Services Administration, were in frequent contact, played golf often and traded workplace gossip. Abramoff showered Safavian with offers of meals, invitations to parties as well as the trip to the fabled St. Andrew’s golf course in Scotland.
Matt Taibbi should acknowledge his source of the information, whatever it was.
NYTimes reported the monthly payments in Oct 2003. (Eric Lipton’s article which mentions the monthly payments is here.)
BlackBoxVoting.org found a monthly Diebold check stub made out to Greenberg Traurig in July 2004 in a famous dumptster-dive incident.
Common Cause reported the information (updated in Dec 2004; not sure if it was in their original Oct 2003 version). (Brad credited the Common Cause report as his source of information in his own article.)
Then of course there was Brad’s outstanding synthesys of the whole issue. Brad’s reporting provided additional information not reported elsewhere, did a lot much to highlight the issue, and provided a larger context.
Wherever Taibbi got his info, he should acknowledge his source(s). If you contact him, don’t assume he got the info from BradBlog since it’s just possible he got it elsewhere. (But if he isn’t using BradBlog as a source, he should be!)
Disclosure–I’m a Matt Taibbi fan. If you chew Taibbi out, be nice. He’s done outstanding reporting on a range of issues, showing the nasty underbelly of things that mere citizens are not meant to see. This includes, if you haven’t yet read them,
Four Amendments and a Funeral: A month inside the house of horrors that is Congress, which was singled out for praise by, among others, David Sirota in his review on Huffington Post which rightly called Taibbi’s article "an absolutely awesome and epic piece."
Also excellent is his recent expose of DC lobbying, "How to be a lobbyist without trying: A personal journey into Washington’s Culture of Greed".
And yes, Taibbi should credit his source for the Greenberg Traurig info.
Please Everyone. STOP. Re-Read. Then Internalize…
…the first excerpt from the Taibbi piece about "smart guys" like Abramoff and Skilling.
The same reality applies to the "geniuses" like Rove and Gingrich. There is no intellectual prowess involved in a simple decision to break the rules. In fact, it is an admission of impotence.
I take special note of this because it is a form of fascist propaganda that is particularly insidious and one that I see far too many on our side take on board.
There’s nothing intelligent about Gingrich’s gutter-sniping his way through a town/culture based on civility. And nothing strategic about Rove lying, cheating, and stealing elections.
It is just non-physical violence. And they are just intellectual and rhetorical thugs.
Don’t allow anyone to try to claim it’s anything more.

Jack Abramoff music video parody
Go to the link attached or to http://www.maverickllc.com and watch the music video parody about white collar crime and political corruption that is sweeping the internet. If you didn’t know "Jack" before, you’ll know more about jack Abramoff, Tom Delay and the scoundrels from Enron, Tyco and Worldcom than you really want to. pass the link on to all your contacts
Bill & Renu – your links are empty. They act like links, but don’t have any URL associated with them.
Does anyone else think that it’s NOT advantageous to progressives to pile more and more on Jack Abramoff? He becomes the scapegoat for all Republican corruption. The issue isn’t how much of the corruption Abramoff is implicated in. The real guilty parties are not Abramoff, Mitch Wade, et al., but their patrons.
