KRUGMAN: ‘They Told You So’

Share article:

Paul Krugman’s Friday column about the praise — and apologies — now owed to those who warned us before going into Iraq about what we now face needs to be read by all. Since the complete column is behind the New York Times’ iron curtain, I’m joining several other websites out there in reposting the column in its entirety below.

Those who not only ignored but attacked the messengers relentlessly and inexcusably (and worse, attacked their patriotism in the bargain!) prior to the ill-conceived assault on Baghdad and just after it’s “fall” should be held accountable for their egregious behavior. Yes, we’re talking to you, Fox “News”, New Republic, Rush Limbaugh, Weekly Standard, NY Post et al! You owe a lot of people a lot of apologies.

Krugman follows in full. Please read it…

They Told You So
By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: December 8, 2006
New York Times

Shortly after U.S. forces marched into Baghdad in 2003, The Weekly Standard published a jeering article titled, “The Cassandra Chronicles: The stupidity of the antiwar doomsayers.” Among those the article mocked was a “war novelist” named James Webb, who is now the senator-elect from Virginia.

The article’s title was more revealing than its authors knew. People forget the nature of Cassandra’s curse: although nobody would believe her, all her prophecies came true. And so it was with those who warned against invading Iraq. At best, they were ignored. A recent article in The Washington Post ruefully conceded that the paper’s account of the debate in the House of Representatives over the resolution authorizing the Iraq war “” a resolution opposed by a majority of the Democrats “” gave no coverage at all to those antiwar arguments that now seem prescient.

At worst, those who were skeptical about the case for war had their patriotism and/or their sanity questioned. The New Republic now says that it “deeply regrets its early support for this war.” Does it also deeply regret accusing those who opposed rushing into war of “abject pacifism?”

Now, only a few neocon dead-enders still believe that this war was anything but a vast exercise in folly. And those who braved political pressure and ridicule to oppose what Al Gore has rightly called “the worst strategic mistake in the history of the United States” deserve some credit.

Unlike The Weekly Standard, which singled out those it thought had been proved wrong, I’d like to offer some praise to those who got it right. Here’s a partial honor roll:

Former President George H. W. Bush and Brent Scowcroft, explaining in 1998 why they didn’t go on to Baghdad in 1991: “Had we gone the invasion route, the United States could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land.”

Representative Ike Skelton, September 2002: “I have no doubt that our military would decisively defeat Iraq’s forces and remove Saddam. But like the proverbial dog chasing the car down the road, we must consider what we would do after we caught it.”

Al Gore, September 2002: “I am deeply concerned that the course of action that we are presently embarking upon with respect to Iraq has the potential to seriously damage our ability to win the war against terrorism and to weaken our ability to lead the world in this new century.”

Barack Obama, now a United States senator, September 2002: “I don’t oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz and other armchair, weekend warriors in this administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne.”

Representative John Spratt, October 2002: “The outcome after the conflict is actually going to be the hardest part, and it is far less certain.”

Representative Nancy Pelosi, now the House speaker-elect, October 2002: “When we go in, the occupation, which is now being called the liberation, could be interminable and the amount of money it costs could be unlimited.”

Senator Russ Feingold, October 2002: “I am increasingly troubled by the seemingly shifting justifications for an invasion at this time. “¦ When the administration moves back and forth from one argument to another, I think it undercuts the credibility of the case and the belief in its urgency. I believe that this practice of shifting justifications has much to do with the troubling phenomenon of many Americans questioning the administration’s motives.”

Howard Dean, then a candidate for president and now the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, February 2003: “I firmly believe that the president is focusing our diplomats, our military, our intelligence agencies, and even our people on the wrong war, at the wrong time. “¦ Iraq is a divided country, with Sunni, Shia and Kurdish factions that share both bitter rivalries and access to large quantities of arms.”

We should honor these people for their wisdom and courage. We should also ask why anyone who didn’t raise questions about the war “” or, at any rate, anyone who acted as a cheerleader for this march of folly “” should be taken seriously when he or she talks about matters of national security.

Accountability…We have to hold them accountable. Otherwise, we’ll be in the same damn criminal murderous syndrome a few years or a decade from now. Let’s not kid ourselves. This has got to stop.

Also, Kucinich’s idea of a “Department of Peace” is an excellent idea. We can’t afford to dismiss it as pie in the sky.

Thanks for the full article Brad. Glad to see my favourite person, for your next President,Howard Dean mentioned.
I went searching to see which Republicans voted against the war (six) and their reasons for doing so…here’s one comment that was right on.
Rep Amo Houghton of New York
“I met with some Arabs the other day, with a group of Israelis and Arabs who were talking about the Middle East, and they said, the Iraqis in general hate Saddam Hussein, but they hate the United States even more.
So Iraq is now one of the only secular countries in that region. And the Sunnis and the Shiites could create such a mess following a war that we could find ourselves against a religious fundamentalist state that could develop, where that is not the case now.

How about Michael Moore, who was BOOED on national television for speaking the truth?”

Well, if he hadn’t been so deceptive with Fahrenheit 9/11… 😉

(Yes, yes… “Shrub’s War” was and is a disaster.)

Yeah, Kucinich always gets ignored, but has been a real warrior for all things reasonable and good. I gave him $500.00 in the 2004 race.

Bowling for Columbine is still prescient. Let’s not forget what Mr. Moore said that night. (paraphrasing) “We live in a country that has a fictitious president”. Hard to believe that Moore could get booed by all those liberals in Hollywood. He talked about that later and said he had to walk out of there all alone. Shame!

Oh, let’s not forget to thank Mr. Krugman!

He has gone way beyond the call of duty and even out of his area of expertise, (economics), to get the truth out there on many issues including multiple articles on voting machines.

    Much better then Newsweak!

Another I told you so: James Baker

Memoirs of Gulf War under Daddy Bush:

I am no longer asked why we did not remove Saddam

For years, the question I was most often asked about Desert Storm is why we did not remove Saddam Hussein from power. [The answer is that] A coalition war to liberate Kuwait could then have been portrayed as a US war of conquest. Furthermore, even if Saddam were captured and his regime toppled, American forces would still have been confronted with the spectre of a military occupation of indefinite duration to pacify a country and sustain a new government in power. The ensuing urban warfare would surely have resulted in more casualties to American GIs than the war itself, thus creating a political firestorm at home.

And as much as Saddam’s neighbours wanted to see him gone, they feared Iraq would fragment in unpredictable ways that would play into the hands of the mullahs in Iran, who could export their brand of Islamic fundamentalism with the help of Iraq’s Shias and quickly transform themselves into a dominant regional power.

So, with all that knowledge of just how bad things could be, he still supported the invasion of Iraq by Baby Bush.

    Idiots.

Brad, I listen to Limbaugh and Hannity whenever I can, so I can see their talking points for their retarded listeners, and yesterday, Hannity was on the Patriotic and religious bandwagon, trying the nationalistic angle, of re-pimping the Iraq War…how they’re fighting for our freedom over there (right…), and a caller asked him if Jesus would kill 655,000 Iraqi’s, and he said that Jesus would use any means whatsoever to remove Sadaam. So, now Hannity speaks for Jesus, and says Jesus would kill 655,000 to remove Sadaam!!! His listeners with any part of their brain remaining, should never listen to his “used car salesman” show again.

On the Limbaugh front, Rush (his nickname, because he gets a “Rush” from Oxycotin) devoted his entire show to bashing Barack Obama. Rush calls him Barack Hussein Obama. Rush said that Obama called Republicans racists…I did not see ANYWHERE where Obama called Republicans racists. Where/when did he say that? I think that is totally FALSE!

    It’s the U.S. citizens vs. Bush/Rush/Hannity/FOX.

Bush & Rush: One friggin’ letter difference in their names!

I cannot stress enough how Rush & Hannity are unAmerican and ruining America the best they can. The 2 liars.

Rush and Hannity are the “Tokyo Rose”‘s of the Republicans! Droning, incessant lies over the airwaves. Any channel that broadcasts them is complicit in ruining America. Any channel that broadcasts them is unAmerican. Jesus would use any means to remove Sadaam Hussein!!! How come they never pay for statements like that from the religious right??? They’re a bunch of liars and hypocrites, too!

Theocracy drives the bus, democracy is assigned a seat way in the rear.

An extreme right-wing fundimentalist christian group called “Christian Embassy” has infiltrated the Pentagon and the high rank of the military officers. Disciples of this rabid christian group are well represented in the ranks of the White House as special assistants to the president, and they number heavily in both Houses of Congress.

How or why government employees who are on the taxpayers payroll or a military man in a government issued military uniform, and use governmental buildings owned by the taxpayers as a backdrop or a prop in this christo-fascist propaganda film is beyond comprehension.

Link to US Government endorsed christo-fascist propaganda film.

This “Christian Embassy” group is similar to the christian mafia group “The Fellowship” who ultimate goal is to also dismantle democracy and install a christian theocratic form of government.

Link to info on the christian group “The Fellowship”.

    Was going to say,..

Hannity, Limbaugh and that ilk are anti-American propagandists who contaminate and pollute the public airwaves controlled by the CMSM. They bend , twist, distort, and contort reality with the agenda to advance the right-wing cause. If that should lead to the destruction of democracy, so be it, as long as the Nazi/Christo/Fascists are enabled to established their warped theocracy and allowed to continue to rape the national treasury for their own self enrichment.

Big Dan is not like them.
