Blogged quickly from the road by Brad…

Following up on Jon Ponder’s earlier coverage of the latest Impeachment machinations — with a date now set for some kind of hearings in the House Judiary Committee on July 25th and even several Republicans breaking ranks to vote in support of accountability — a statement this week from Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) pretty much nails the entire matter, at least the most obvious, in one fell paragraph as reported at RAW STORY:

“Our Constitution is being destroyed. We are losing our nation to a war based on lies. I am determined to get this bill to committee for a hearing,” he said. “The President has conducted the affairs of the nation in a manner which cries out for justice and it is the Constitutional obligation of Congress to check his wanton abuses of U.S. and international law. We have troops whose lives were put on the line because the President told them Iraq was a threat to the United States and it was not. The loss of lives of our troops and of innocent Iraqi civilians is a direct result of the lies this president told to Congress. He must be held accountable.”

UPDATE: John Conyers’ press release on “Imperial Presidency” hearings (nothing like Impeachment hearings, of course) to be held in the U.S. House Judiciary Committee next Friday and six different “allegations of misconduct by the administration” (nothing like Articles of Impeachment, of course), now follows in full below…

For Immediate Release: July 17, 2008

Conyers Announces Hearing on Bush Imperial Presidency

(Washington) – Today House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. announced that, on July 25, the House Committee on the Judiciary will hold a hearing on the Imperial Presidency of George W. Bush and possible legal responses.

“Over the last seven plus years, there have been numerous credible allegations of serious misconduct by officials in the Bush Administration,” said Conyers. “At the same time, the administration has adopted what many would describe as a radical view of its own powers and authorities. As Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I believe it is imperative that we pursue a comprehensive review commensurate to this constitutionally dangerous combination of circumstances. Next Friday’s hearings will be an important part of that ongoing effort.”

The Committee is expected to examine a range of legal and legislative responses to allegations of administration misconduct and their expansion of executive branch power.

Since the beginning of the 110th Congress, the Committee has conducted extensive oversight into allegations of misconduct by the administration, including: (1) improper politicization of the Justice Department and the U.S. Attorneys offices, including potential misuse of authority with regard to election and voting controversies; (2) misuse of executive branch authority and the adoption and implementation of the so-called unitary executive theory, including in the areas of presidential signing statements and regulatory authority; (3) misuse of investigatory and detention authority with regard to U.S. citizens and foreign nationals, including questions regarding the legality of the administration’s surveillance, detention, interrogation, and rendition programs; (4) manipulation of intelligence and misuse of war powers, including possible misrepresentations to Congress related thereto; (5) improper retaliation against administration critics, including disclosing information concerning CIA operative Valerie Plame, and obstruction of justice related thereto; and (6) misuse of authority in denying Congress and the American people the ability to oversee and scrutinize conduct within the administration, including through the use of various asserted privileges and immunities.

The July 25 hearing will be held at 10:00 a.m. in room 2141 of the Rayburn House Office Building. Additional information, including witness participation, will be announced next week.

    Brad,

John Conyers, Nancy Pelosi, and Stenny Hoyers have been compromised.

They were all on Intelligent Comittees who were informed by the Republican majority at the time that torture was being committed against so called Al Quaida operatives.

They knew: Conyers, Pelosi, and Hoyers knew people were being tortured. They let it happen.

Pelosi states that impeachment is off the table? Imagine that. Now she won’t have to be accountable for her actions.

Conyers states that Impeachment is off the table.
Now he won’t be accountable for his actions.

I suggest that we, the American people, vote out all incumbents.

Where is JOHN D. Negroponte with his death squad credentials and shady past in all this? When did Bush know and what did he know? Let ask Vincent Bugliosi about this matter.

Not sure, but I think people are tired of getting their hopes up, and probably disappointed that Kucinich collapsed the thirty-five down to one instead of expanding it to sixty. It’s kinda like we’re being whipped to death, Ed. Maybe we’re past screaming… waiting for Godot…?

Agent 99 has it right, unfortunately. It is, indeed, disappointing to have the articles collapsed instead of expanded, not to mention having “hearings” only on “imperial presidency”(!!!) abuses instead of on impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanors.

Still, at least Kucinich has had the courage to persist, and has done so in the face of endless ridicule, fierce GOP opposition, and determined resistance by his fellow Dems. So let’s give the man his due and thank him for trying really hard.

That’s the absolute least he deserves and the absolute least we owe him.

I hate to say it, but now I know how it feels to live in an empire. There was a Roman Senate that used to talk about issues in the empire, but when the emperor told them to do what they were told to do, thats what the Roman Senate did. Just like out congress today. Hail Caesar! Time for Mc Cain to work on his fiddle.
