I had been intending to post an answer to the ongoing — and quickly escalating — ACORN smears being issued of late by the GOP enemies of democracy out there, who have decided to intensify their unsubstantiated assaults on the community organization, given its effectiveness at registering millions of low-income voters across the country.
Today’s incredible raid of an ACORN office in Las Vegas — in hotly contested Nevada, as coincidence would have it — has forced me to push this to the top of the heap right now. I’ve also posted ACORN’s statement on today’s nonsense in Vegas at the end of this article. Note to corporate media: Be sure not to read or report on that part of the story!
With prospects looking bleak for the Republicans this November, pulling out the old ACORN lie — in hopes of scaring people away from the polls, causing chaos in November by challenging voters when they show up to vote, and putting in place baseless grounds to contest close results later on (when the GOP become “sore losers”) — is just about all they have left at this point.
Doubtless you’ve heard the smears by now: that ACORN is committing “voter fraud,” on behalf of Obama, in hotly contested swing states. The media have been all too happy to pass that garbage on, without bothering to note that, in fact, the organization attempts to authenticate every registration form its workers submit and by law they must turn in every form to election officials — even if they find a registration to be fraudulent when they call the phone number submitted on the form, or if the forms are otherwise suspect or incomplete.
They do so, and they flag all questionable registration forms as being suspect before turning them in to officials.
The thanks they receive for registering millions of new voters that nobody else has bothered with, and for notifying officials about questionable registration forms when they turn them in, is that the GOP’s democracy-hating propagandists and election officials run to the media shouting, “ACORN is committing voter fraud! They’ve turned in hundreds and thousands of fraudulent registration forms!”
Of course they have. They have to. By law. But what those GOP despots of democracy always forget to mention is that it was ACORN themselves who notified officials about the potentially fraudulent and/or incomplete forms in the first place!…
Due to their success in registering voters, ACORN has long been a strawman target for the GOP. In 2004, for example, just days before the Presidential election, the wingnut media even went so far as to falsely report that the group had registered a terrorist to vote in Ohio.
For the quickest idea of how the GOP ACORN scam has run amok again this year, as dutifully forwarded by the often clueless corporate media, and then the rightwing wankers in the blogosphere who are only to happy to help enable those who are lying to them — by putting truth, democracy and country second — take a look at the following game of rightwing “blogosphere telephone” concerning a recent news conference called by a Lake County, Indiana, GOP chair in order to sound the phony alarm about “fraud” committed by ACORN…
- 10/2/08: Northwest Indiana Times files a report headlined “County rejects large number of invalid voter registrations.” The article reports on a news conference held by the Lake County, IN, Republican Party chairman, John Curley, who claims “fraudulent applications are the workings of ACORN groups operating from Milwaukee and Chicago who are getting out the vote for Obama.” Curley notes “one registration form was filled out in the name and address of Jimmy John’s, a Crown Point fast-food outlet,” and other problem registration forms. He says that county election officials were able to “weed out obviously invalid applications,” but neither the reporter, nor apparently Curley, bother to note that ACORN had already informed the officials about the questionable “Jimmy John’s” registration when they turned it in, along with the other separately flagged registration forms.
- 10/5/08: Susan Duclos at DigitalJournal.com files an article, linking back to the Times story, headlined “More Dead, Underage And Fictitious Voter Registrations in Indiana, From ACORN”, in which the uncurious blogger describes ACORN as “in the news in multiple cities across America lately for filing voter registrations for people that were dead, underage and in some cases duplicate filings.” She charges “many people that should be able to legitimately vote, might not be able to because ACORN members ‘delivered incomplete registrations.'” She fails to note that even “incomplete registrations” must be turned in to officials — by law.
- 10/6/08: Some yutz at Newsvine, then links back to Duclos with the headine “Obama and Acorn Register Dead Voters in Indiana,” virtually charging Obama himself with personally voting thousands of times, using the names of dead people, or some such nonsense. Thankfully, that story has been “removed by the Newsvine community,” who must have been smart enough to see it for the bullshit that it was, since I originally saw it yesterday. But not without the damage already being done, of course.
That’s just one of the smallest examples of how this works. Add to it the unchecked megaphones of Rush, Drudge, Hannity, Fox, and the democracy-haters are off and running, and have their strategy for chaos, purged voters, long lines at the polls, and post-election challenges all lined up for this November. Add the Bush Dept. of Justice to it, and friendly local and state cops, and you get today’s PR bonanza in Las Vegas, where the “ACORN Raid,” substantiated or not, will be second only to tonight’s debate in the headlines tomorrow and for the rest of the month.
As mentioned, ACORN has just released a statement noting a number of the points I’ve made above — and which I have been making to anybody who brings up this garbage over the past year — on the events that took place today in Las Vegas. Earlier today, they put out a response to the Indiana allegations. Those are also now posted below. Please help spread the word, since clearly, the corporate media won’t bother to the real story.
ACORN Statement from Bertha Lewis, Interim Chief Organizer, on Incident in Las Vegas:
“Over the past year, ACORN has worked hard to help over 80,000 people in Clark County register to vote. As part of our nonpartisan voter registration program, we have [to] review all the applications submitted by our canvassers. When we have identified suspicious applications, we have separated them out and flagged them for election officials. We have zero tolerance for fraudulent registrations. We immediately dismiss employees we suspect of submitting fraudulent registrations.
For the past 10 months, any time ACORN has identified a potentially fraudulent application, we turn that application in to election officials separately and offer to provide election officials with the information they would need to pursue an investigation or prosecution of the individual.
Election officials routinely ignored this information and failed to act. In early July, ACORN asked to meet with election officials to express our concerns that they were not acting on information ACORN had presented to them. ACORN met with Clark County elections officials and a representative of the Secretary of State on July 17th. ACORN pleaded with them to take our concerns about fraudulent applications seriously. One week later, elections officials asked us to provide them with a second copy of what we had previously provided to them. ACORN responded by giving election officials copies of 46 “problem application packages,” which involved 33 former canvassers.
On September 23, ACORN had received a subpoena dated September 19th requesting information on 15 employees, all of whom had been included in the packages we had previously submitted to election officials. ACORN provided our personnel records on these 15 employees on September 29.
Today’s raid by the Secretary of State’s Office is a stunt that serves no useful purpose other than discredit our work registering Nevadans and distracting us from the important work ahead of getting every eligible voter to the polls.”
And in regard to Indiana, from an ACORN spokesperson earlier today…
ACORN has submitted 1.3 million applications nationally and over 23,000 in Indiana.
ACORN engages in comprehensive quality control procedures, every card is called through three times.
ACORN flags and turns in three kinds of cards, those that it can verify, those that are incomplete, and those that it flags as problematic. It turns those in labeled in a special way and are very conservative in terms of what it flags as problematic. It has stacks of problematic cover sheets.
The Lake County Board of Elections refused to acknowledge the categories of cards when ACORN turned them in, or sign its paperwork. The Lake County Board knew about the questionable registrations today because ACORN flagged them for the board. For example, the Jimmy John’s card is one that a caller had flagged and labeled as problematic. ACORN can get that caller to talk to the press.
ACORN did Voter Registration from in July and some parts of August. As it was doing quality control ACORN noticed a large number of problematic cards and because of this it eased doing registration until late September when it could clear its quality control backlog.
ACORN’s recent cards from September and early October are not problematic at the same levels.

The one thing missing from your article, and the one thing that is bothering me is the Nevada Secretary of State is a Democrat. Why would he do this? ACORN did nothing wrong, is he going to go after the canvassers that put in the false information? I have seen advertisements for ACORN in my state where they say “Make up to $25 per hour” Is ACORN paying per vote application? I don’t know that Ross Miller (NV’s new Dem SoS) had anything to do with this raid, frankly. Reports I’ve seen, so far, say “state and federal officials”, whoever that is.
That said, Miller has not been, um, particularly impressive on these issues. For the moment, I’ll leave it at that. Happy to offer more on those lines when I’m able to learn more.

No, it doesn’t seem to me that ACORN is taking the “Republicans made me do it” defense — as the Brad guy said, ACORN has to turn in all registrations by law, and has even been marking the suspect ones (the same applications the nuts are whining about, it also seems). In that cycle in late September Sproul got in trouble with voter registration in two states by destroying Democratic registration forms.
Immediately Rorwellian went to work and blamed ACORN with false allegations.
A year or so later ACORN was completely cleared.
That leaded to the firing of several of the U.S. Attorneys for not manufacturing good evidence to get ACORN.
As to Nathan Sproul, the Justice Department took the cases away from the states and then buried them.

I have worried about paying people to register voters in the past. There is much room for the voter rolls to be corrupted when you pay someone by the registrant and not by the hour or use volunteers. It is important to be able to train people with the ability to fire them if they do not fill out the forms etc correctly. But unfortunately, the organizers’ eagerness to complete volume often gets lost in that, as well.
It is pointless to register people if they aren’t going to vote anyway. Most ‘good’ organizers understand this, sometimes the training process loses sight of this.
But let’s face it, this was on the evening news and the fact that Michael Connell, who works for McCain refuses to be deposed has gone unnoticed. This investigation has been stifled for nearly 4 years, and yet somehow the damn ‘liberal'(ha….what a joke) media won’t even talk about it. The voters have more to worry about with this man still free & clear of criminal charges, while in the employ of the McCain campaign. Connell’s involvement with the republican party should not be considered “client confidentiality” – especially since that is the whole issue.

Thanks Brad, for explaining to people that ACORN is obligated to turn in all registrations, suspect or not. Let’s hope that this issue gets more notice in other outlets. You will be happy to know that FAUX ( FOX ) news did ‘mention’ that the culprit is probably over eager workers who were trying to complete volume for the sake of profit – not ACORN faking up registrations.

People keep saying that having the right to vote is a most important and precious thing. But, I can’t seem to figure out why it is that there exists a need to rush out and register others, then bombard them with reminders only to spend time making sure they get to the polls. Then I figured it out; others votes and your own desire far out weigh the inspirations of others to vote. Basically, the non-voters are lazy and without care while you are just plain selfish and inconsiderate of anyone of holds a separate opinion.
Do you realize that every single voter that you register under the ACORN principles and encouraged to vote under the same actually cancels out a vote of one who has the right to hold different views; moreover, do you care?

In my opinion, the practice of registering other voters should be outlawed. Registering is not that difficult; I did it, you did it and I am sure others and their families can do it as well. As for the homeless, well they have plenty of time on their hands to get themselves registered. I can see what happened here. When I lived in Washington, DC, the local County Paper (run by a Republican) hired people to go out and sell subscriptions. They were paid based on piecework – how many subscriptions they sold.
So these folks went out and wrote down the names of everyone in my apartment building who was foolish enough to list their name on their mailbox, including me.
I started receiving this paper, thinking it was free or a promotion. Then the bills started coming. Then the phone calls – threatening ones, claiming they were going to damaging my credit rating if I did not “pay up”.
ACORN may have had good intentions, but if they used canvassers, the canvassers may have gone overboard. Also, there is the possibility that Republicans dumped clearly fraudulent registrations forms on ACORN with the idea of then using this data later on to attack the organization.
The myth of Voter Fraud is just that. The Republicnas have yet to show even ONE person caught in the act of illegally voting. But yet the myth persists.
With Obama leading by nearly double digits in the polls, one wonders what their argument is going to be this time – that the pollsters are polling the dead?
Do we really need more proof that liberalism IS a mental illness? I think not.

I, like many Americans believe that character, honesty, and integrity really do go to the foundation of who the next president should be.Obama is ahead in the polls because Obama is dramatically outspending McCain with television advertising … he has a biased media in the tank, who provides him with more and better exposure, and editorial endorsement … Obama has 96% of the black vote … he enjoys the relentless support of a completely biased entertainment industry, plus the left wing educational community, plus massive illegal, or unethical fund raising, and voter registration drives, by groups like Acorn … not to mention the fact that thanks to democratic propaganda, McCain has to carry Bush’s weight. At this point in time, many Americans are also beginning to question the validity of the POLLS. Are they skewed, like the biased media? Do they truly reflect reality? Are the sample groups mostly black voters? If the Democrats are so sure they’ve already won, how come they keep trying so hard to make the rest of us believe it? Just like they did against Hillary! There is a good chance that if we can keep voter fraud out of this election, that on November 4th, the actual voters, in the privacy of their booths, will elect McCain/Palin, by a comfortable margin. If you vote for Obama, you are also voting for voter fraud and a crooked media.

Acorn should never be funded by me the taxpayer. This pork barrel funding for special interests should be stopped across the board. It is obvious these people are if not criminal in their activities are at least immoral by registering “dead” people and allowing and encouraging multiple registrations by a single person. I think the taxpayers should file a class action suit against this and other organizations like this and take back our tax dollars!!

They intend to use the scam vote machines to fake the votes and then cry foul regarding ACORN when that isn’t quite enough due to overwhelming Obama support. Bush’s court will hand the election over to McCain unless we can stop it.

Once again, this is an example of a good program that is being grossly abused and manipulated. No matter how many ways you color it, there is no defending OR disputing the fact that ACORN is behind the bussing and trucking in of hundreds upon thousands of illegal aliens for the sole purpose of voting for Obama. By law, to be able to vote is this country, you need to be a CITIZEN of the U.S., which, by law, you have to be able to speak, read, and understand ENGLISH, not to mention, have a valid I.D. These illegals are being allowed to vote without ANY of these. If they are not allowed to vote, ACORN comes back screaming “RACIST”. You all can yell “LIAR!” all you want, but these are the facts, and there is no excuse!!!!!!!!
