Informant admits to misleading investigators
MSNBC Special Report On Wednesday: Are terror alerts used as political tools?

Guest blogged by David Edwards

Newsday and CNN are reporting that the highly publicized recent subway terror threats in New York were, in fact, a hoax:

The sources said an informant in Iraq who provided the tip had told investigators there was a terrorist plot involving New York's subway system. That informant admitted he gave false information, the sources said.

...
Government sources said the three men arrested in Iraq with suspected links to the possible plot had been interviewed and underwent lie detector tests showing they knew nothing about such a plan.

CNN Video in Windows Media format...
CNN Video in QuickTime format...

The additional security measures in New York came Friday only hours after President Bush gave a speech which promoted increased terror fears. Police even shut down parts of the subway due to a suspicious unattended Pepsi bottle.

Across the country, other terror threats alarmed citizens. On Friday, the Washington Monument was evacuated due to a bomb threat. A Rolling Stones concert in Virginia was also temporarily interrupted due to another bomb threat the same day.

MSNBC's Countdown plans to investigate the correlation between politics and terror threats on Wednesday night's show. Last night, Countdown's host, Keith Olbermann noted:

OLBERMANN: And then there is the intersection, or at least the juxtaposition, between politics and terror. We noted it here last week when, after a speech by the president about the war on terror and after the word that the special prosecutor would not guarantee to Karl Rove that he would not indict him, New York City suddenly announced there was credible, specific intelligence about a terror threat to its subway system.

...
OLBERMANN: Last Thursday, we spoke of at least 13 coincidences of timing between bad political news for the government and a terror or terror-related event. We will be presenting a special report detailing those and other coincidences on Wednesday night's edition of this news hour, "The Nexus of Politics and Terror" on COUNTDOWN this Wednesday at 8:00 and midnight Eastern here on MSNBC.

One wonders how many pennies were spent trying to determine the veracity of the claims before spending millions of dollars reacting to the sham.

The neoCon administration likes scares so it does not investigate them.

It just lets the public experience sham fear and sham terrorist threats.

This admin is pathetic.

Better late than never for the MSM to address this. During the run-up to the 2004 elections, we saw this over and over and over. How long before we start seeing the Terror Alert Level start bouncing up and down again?

On a side note: Do you know where your duct tape is?

Go, Olbermann--the only journalist to speak the truth about the 2004 elections until the networks shut him down.

Just imagine if he actually starts to question the Big Kahuna--9-11. Oh, my God...

This sickens so many New Yorkers. According to polls (yes, we all know polls can be manipulated), more than 89% of New York City residents felt the Mayor's announcement about the threat was appropriate.

Remember, this mayor is expected to easily win re-election. He is a moderate Republican. New York City is very much a Liberal town. Most people I know will be voting for him.

There is a small, powerless fringe element which attacks him for being white, or Jewish, or wealthy, or short... None of those things makes him a bad mayor.

So, he doesn't need to divert attention with fake news like some people we know. I actually think if he weren't popular he would just step down.

He got information which seemed very real and very scary. He got analysis of the information from some of the best intelligence people in the world. The FBI stood next to him and the NYPD in complete support of what was being announced.

He doesn't need to apologize to us for being on the job and protecting the citizens he serves.

I am sure some in Washington are pleased that Bloomberg got played... or did he? Or did he get played by some group in America which plants information in order to divert attention from its own sins???

We probably won't find out a lot of things which happen during the GW Bush years. It's all either classified or part of an ongoing investigation... everything!!! What does that say about them?

And yet, they say it's Patriotic to monitor my library card usage... they say there is no right to privacy in the Constitution... they brought back a lot of stuff from the McCarthy Era.

But, America can't ask them a question about anything... "Classified... ongoing investigation" or they just change the subject and ignore the question forever.

Just how does Bloomberg, a Republican, get elected in Liberal City, er New York City? What are the politics there that result in several Republican mayors? Just curious.

Re: Privacy

You vote for a Republican you get no privacy.
You vote for a Democrat you get privacy.

Your choice.

Re: Voting Rights

The citizens of Washington, D.C. have no representation in Congress. The 2000 and 2004 presidential elections appear clearly to have been stolen.

You vote for a Republican you get no voting rights.
You vote for a Democrat you get voting rights.

And they say there's no differrence between a Dem and a Repub...

We should have two Constitutional Amendments proposed (I don't expect Repubs would let them pass, but it would make the differences clearer to the public): one to guarantee Privacy, just as Free Speech is guaranteed; one to guarantee Voting Rights for every American.

"BOO" is the only word in the English language that Bush can spell correctly in two out of three attempts. However, the lack of a "ZE" ending seems to trip him up occasionally.

I'm suprised there isn't more of this...

If we're torturing people... and they actually know nothing... their only choice is to make shit up or become resigned to receiving more torture.

I wonder if this was an intentional hoax... or just "intelligence" obtained through torture?

"CIA, French intelligence kill 4, capture 5 Israelis in NY subway attack

U.S. media and NY officials called the incident a "significant, specific threat"

BB2 - Good query re: Tom Flocco. I think he has the goods on the assassination of my old friend John Jr, although some of his allegations must be off and there must be omissions, for example. I treat his stuff with caution, but I refuse to simply dismiss it out of hand. These reptiles will apparently stop at nothing, so that would by definition include all of the above...

MarkH #7,

Bloomberg is Moderate. Basically, Bloomberg is fiscally conservative and socially liberal.

It comes down to business sense really.

There rarely emerges a Democrat who manage an operation as big as this amazing city.

Guiliani wasn't such a great guy... then came 9/11... Different world since then.

The Bush folks are very aware of votes... always have been. They hold NYC's lack of votes for Bush against us. Hence, he had never been here before he started exploiting victims of 9/11 for his own gains.

And, New Orleans better not hold out too long for all those great things Bush promised. It never comes.

It does have a ring of truth to it, in that US and Israeli intelligence are behind all the terrorist attacks that they blame al-CIAduh for....9-11, Bali, Madrid, London, the Hariri assasinatiion.....

I couldn't find out anything about Tom Heneghan, or why he can claim the status of "national security and U.S. intelligence expert". The only thing I did find was a link from the source article at stewweb.com, to Hal Turner's webpage, where Stew and Tom have a live webcast every Thursday as Hal's guests. Hal Turner's website is a white aryan supremacist nazi thing, so it's hard to take this information seriously, especially when it hasn't been reported anywhere else......but still......I think the Busheviks had another big "terrorist" attack planned, and someone put a stop to it. The motivation for the warnings was real. I'm just sorry the information came from people like this.

BB2 - Indeed I did catch your post as it went by. I'd already seen it somewhere, as I'm a HUGE fan of Kurt's. (In fact I was once one of 300 undergrads applying for a 6-person creative writing seminar with him. He was very kind, explaining that early in the career of every great artist come instances of rejection, and that, sadly, for most of us this would be just one more. Then he invited us up to his desk to submit our manuscripts. I just got him to sign mine and took it home for a keepsake.) Thinking about what might have been (and all the base evil that surely would never have been) had the votes just been fairly and accurately counted in 2000 makes me weep with rage! I gotta give those SOBs credit for screwing up HUGE if they really have to screw up, as they apparently do.
Sorry about the lengthy post, but Brad shouldn't have any monopoly on prolificity ;-)

I don't believe any of the propaganda spewing from the mouth of bushco. We are always being threatened by the terrorists...well go figure. This is the War president, so he has to make sure we are all scared out of our wits. The timing of these events is so obvious. I haven't even read the article noted, as I dismissed the whole incident as soon it was announced, right after another War on Terror speech.

When one begins with the premise that 911 was an inside job one begins to view everything since then in a new light. I, for one, believed it was on the day I watched the buildings burn. I was glad to see that many are seriously researching this and there is so much evidence that shows the official story is bogus.

I have been to the Tom Flocco site. I need to spend some time there as I am not quite sure how to read him yet. The VK Durham stuff has me interested. She takes no prisoners. The rantings of an demented woman or is there some truth there, I don't know and need to look further into her claims. M4 (who proudly wears her tin foil hat-shaped like a pyramid)

VotersUnite.org's Daily Voting News 'Daily Voting News'
For December 04, 2008

by John Gideon

The Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA) was signed into law in Oct. 2002. Amongst other things HAVA required the formation of the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and provided some mandates, in Title III of the law, for federal elections including some standards for voting systems. Those standards include, but are not limited to, accessibility for voters with disabilities and accuracy in the vote count. Testing by experts in accessibility has shown that none of the Direct Recording Electronic (DRE, usually touch-screen) voting systems presently in use meet the requirements for accessibility for disabled voters. Failures in testing and vote counting in real elections have also proven that, at times, the voting systems presently being used across the country do not meet the federally mandated requirements for accuracy.

So what guidance has been provided by the EAC to the states with regards to Title III? Well, actually none. In fact even though voting systems presently in use do not meet federal law the EAC is just now getting around to issuing guidance to state and local election officials and, according to the draft of the plan ‘featured’ below, it is going to take another two years before the EAC can complete the guidance.

Why can’t they just tell the vendors and the states that the law is clear and, if they fail to follow that law, violations will be referred to the DoJ? The fact that the vendors misrepresent their products as being accessible is a clear violation of the law. It is time they are held responsible and it doesn’t take two years of studying Title III of HAVA to make that clear....
