How Does It Feel To Be Played For Chumps?

From testimony by Republican fundraiser Michael Scanlon at Wednesday's Republican-run Senate hearings:

In plain terms, Scanlon confessed the source code of recent Republican electoral victories: target religious conservatives, distract everyone else, and then railroad through complex initiatives.

"The wackos get their information through the Christian right, Christian radio, mail, the internet and telephone trees," Scanlon wrote in the memo, which was read into the public record at a hearing of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. "Simply put, we want to bring out the wackos to vote against something and make sure the rest of the public lets the whole thing slip past them." The brilliance of this strategy was twofold: Not only would most voters not know about an initiative to protect Coushatta gambling revenues, but religious "wackos" could be tricked into supporting gambling at the Coushatta casino even as they thought they were opposing it.

Do you people get it yet? You're the "wackos" according to your own people.

You've been played.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee was investigating Abramoff and his partner, former DeLay aide Michael Scanlon, for squeezing more than $60 million in fees, and political contributions to DeLay-related politicians, from Abramoff's clients, Indian tribes which own gambling casinos. Grover Norquist, Ralph Reed, and Reed's religious networks all shared in the loot. The Washington law office of Greenberg, Traurig, was Abramoff's headquarters for both the Indian scams and the SunCruz caper.
IMO this asshole and his kind should have to pay restitution of every single dime, hard labor on work prisons, pea farms, something besides a federal country club prison....

Excellent sound bite for any election. And I mean EXCELLANT.

Abramoff ( or Scanlon) has referred to Indian clients in racist terms in e-mail. Sorry, can't remember the term.

Hopefully this will keep little Ralphie Reed from gaining more power.

Abramoff is the worst traitor I've ever seen come to the country. He's so involved in every coverup, the 9-11 whitewash, the works.

That is one of the downfalls of being a one trick pony ... that is ... being a one issue political participant ...

I warned many of the folk who voted for Bush because they thought he was anti this or anti that ... politics is more than one issue.

Those that do not get this will be handled.

That's the problem with blind faith. It makes it easy for unscrupulous leaders to lead the faithful around by the nose.

I don't think that the fundies will wake up, Bush threw a few billion of our childrens (read deficit) tax dollars at their masters, to shut em up and break the government bank at the same time, thats part of the real agenda that the Cons are up to
Pretty soon all there will be is for profit, private corporations, and a lot of military spending sucking up our bucks, with no help for anyone who is unfortunate enough to fall through the cracks

Where did the idea come from to let Native Americans run casinos, anyway? Was it an implied apology for using the Union Army to grab their land for the gold underneath, back in the 1860s? Was it recompense for building railroads across their property at the same time, and not compensating them fairly? Was it an acknowledgement that all those "Cowboys and Indians" films we saw 50 years ago were nothing more than propaganda?

Now, it turns out they've been swindled again. As they say in the middle of a cowboy film, "This is where I came in."

As a descendant of Cherokee heritage,I guess you could say, that at least someone in government had a twinge of guilt!!I feel such a sense of betrayal, that our country has failed each and every one of us again,by allowing these thugs, liars, thieves to dominate our government for five long years!!!WHAT WILL IT TAKE,TO RUN THESE MURDERING THUGS OUT OF WASHINGTON,STRAIGHT INTO PRISON,WHERE THEY BELONG??The only hope we have,is to keep the pressure on the CONGRESS, THE MEDIA,and TAKE IT TO THE STREETS!!!WE MUST NOT LOSE OUR MOMENTUM,THEY MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO SHOUT US DOWN!WE WILL NOT BACK DOWN!!I guess we should thank Bush for one thing,HE HAS UNITED THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY,EXPOSED THIER PARTY FOR THE LOWLIFE SCUM THAT THEY ARE!!!

VotersUnite.org's Daily Voting News 'Daily Voting News'
For December 04, 2008

by John Gideon

The Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA) was signed into law in Oct. 2002. Amongst other things HAVA required the formation of the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and provided some mandates, in Title III of the law, for federal elections including some standards for voting systems. Those standards include, but are not limited to, accessibility for voters with disabilities and accuracy in the vote count. Testing by experts in accessibility has shown that none of the Direct Recording Electronic (DRE, usually touch-screen) voting systems presently in use meet the requirements for accessibility for disabled voters. Failures in testing and vote counting in real elections have also proven that, at times, the voting systems presently being used across the country do not meet the federally mandated requirements for accuracy.

So what guidance has been provided by the EAC to the states with regards to Title III? Well, actually none. In fact even though voting systems presently in use do not meet federal law the EAC is just now getting around to issuing guidance to state and local election officials and, according to the draft of the plan ‘featured’ below, it is going to take another two years before the EAC can complete the guidance.

Why can’t they just tell the vendors and the states that the law is clear and, if they fail to follow that law, violations will be referred to the DoJ? The fact that the vendors misrepresent their products as being accessible is a clear violation of the law. It is time they are held responsible and it doesn’t take two years of studying Title III of HAVA to make that clear....
