Anyone considering purchasing these machines should
consider that they're going to get moved around in
trucks, set up, moved back, warehoused--again and
again and again by tired and careless county workers.
And after a few years they're going to start to get flakey.
Will they all need to be tested individually to see that
they still work right? Will they show error messages
when they fail, or will they just quietly start counting
backwards?

I voted here in Virginia. Had to press a little harder on the screen than on a "normal" touch screen. I didn't have much of a wait at about 4:30 pm tonight. My boyfriend had a wait when he voted at 7:am. There was were more democrats out front than republicans. I got the democratic ticket handout to take in with me to vote. We were both asked for ID, so that they could check the roll book.

I know the Virginia election is honest, because I saw a photo of George Allen with the Republican candidate, and George was holding a football.

Every little problem needs to be compiled into a list and every lost vote must be counted in that list.

When votes are lost, we should sue.

ABC just reported a win for the Democrat.

Virginia Dems won the Gov race but lost Lt. Gov. at 50.66% and Att. Gen still up in the air. Voter turn out was great!

The sad thing is that I and a couple other IT people in the span of a dinner conversation put together a full voting system design that is secure, prevents vote tampering, has paper backup (something the current system does not have), is easy to use and cheap to setup on any off the shelf computer and would be open source.

I really believe the companies producing voting software should be required to be completely open source. That includes both the voting stations and central servers that aggregate the tally counts.

Of course since the SBE is in the pockets of the companies producing the voting systems I doubt we will ever see a change unless we force the issue.

WyrdOne - have you put a sample of your system up on the internet for viewing?

It was more of a "we drew this out on paper as a quick design" over dinner.

But next time I'm at dinner with those friends I'll bring up the idea of actually producing the system and putting it up for review.
