It would establish a quick-reaction force and a nearby presence of Marines in the region. It also said the U.S. must pursue stability in Iraq through diplomacy.

But House Republicans planned to put to a vote _ and reject _ their own symbolic alternative resolution that simply said: "It is the sense of the House of Representatives that the deployment of United States forces in Iraq be terminated immediately."

With stinging rhetoric, Democrats criticized the GOP alternative. They said House Republican leaders killed Murtha's thoughtful approach.

The fiery, emotional debate climaxed when Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, the most junior member of the House, told of a phone call she received from a Marine colonel.

"He asked me to send Congress a message _ stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message _ that cowards cut and run, Marines never do," Schmidt said.

Democrats booed and shouted her down _ causing the House to come to a standstill.

Rep. Harold Ford, D-Tenn., charged across the chamber's center aisle screaming that it was an uncalled for personal attack. "You guys are pathetic. Pathetic," yelled Rep. Marty Meehan, D-Mass.

I'm an independent and could see this whole bill and debate was a sham to begin with. It has nothing to do with Murtha's bill, which was to gradually draw down troops and James Murtha's bill has never even come up for a vote.

They are going to bring it up for a vote after the discharge petition. The Pentagon has already given official notice, that the withdrawl plan has begun (so they're hypocrites also...)

Murtha is no more a "war hawk" than John Kerry. He supported the war when it was popular and has now returned to the liberal/anti-war reservation after it's turned bitter. The cowardice in the halls of Congress is appalling. We need to jack up the war, not pull out, so the Iraqis will have adequate time to build up their own army to deal with the terrorists.
