Who was in charge of counting? Could it have been Katherine Harris using the latest software from Tom Feeneys favorite software company and Diebold voting machines?

That's what's so funny about all this.. These morons are busy screwing each other over in plain view, and the masses/media/officials sleep.. let this kind of crap continue, and not just in "this instance", but across the country.

I still can't get my head around how patently ignorant you have to be to say "there's no problem" or "it's democrats who rig elections by having dead black slangs vote"..

.....morons....

So has there been any attempt at explanation of where the votes came from?

The story said there were more votes than congress members who were eligble to vote. Does that mean some congress members were ineligible, but voted anyway? Or that all members were eligible, but there were more votes than voters present?

I'd like to see that statement clarified.

It's funny as hell, but something feels weird. (Okay, weirder than USUAL, even where someone from OHIO is involved.)

On a side note - what do we know about Boehner? Is he buds with Blackwell?

I have it on good authority that Rep. Shadegg said that the vote count was flawed, after which Rep. Boehner replied that Shadegg was a conspiracy theorist who hated America. Rep. Blunt said he'd accept the results, but that the system should be improved in time for the 2042 leadership race.

Geez, Louise. This is fricking hysterical.

Okay, according to THIS article, last year he voted WITH BUSH 100% of the time on every issue, he was given a 100% approval rating by the Christian Coalition, and he's a big fan of lobbyists and has financial ties to Abramoff.

Meet John Boehner

Catherine

I'm not sure how often it happens...but the machines on the house floor have been known to 'malfunction'

I'd say that area needs to be inspected. File public record requests?

There's several court cases, lawsuits etc going on in Pennsylvania and Texas now, and I think finally we will get real traction on HR 550.

If they pass and mandate HR 550 and the congress finishes that bill, the ridiculous machines will be randomly audited that are left. I think its going to take down some crooks also, as the only way to deal with it as I have said since the beginning....

Is criminal convictions.

It may even snare Tom Feeney finally and get rid of these crooks from both parties.

The most prominent Republicans have become parodies of themselves. Just imagine a first-ballot total of more votes than eligible voters, followed by a second ballot where a guy from Ohio, who was in second place originally, suddenly wins!

It hasn't been featured prominently here, but the three-way race to replace DeLay became a contest to see which of the three was least tarnished by Abramoff. Shadegg from Arizona actually said publicly, "I'm the best choice because I have less taint than my two opponents." That's now the standard for a Republican leader...not being as corrupt as another Republican leader with whom he'll continue to cooperate.

She has petitioned for a Writ of Certiorari, which is very, very difficult to get.

Out of many thousands of requests only a handful are granted.

It would be nice if that case got in, and great if the Supremes reversed the lower courts.

Speaking of voting irregularities, I noticed that the republicans have much, much more money for campaigning than the democrats do.

There may be a reason for this in conjuction with an article about DoD fraud (link here).

Isn't it possible that Iraq cash numbering in the billions, which was "lost", or pentagon trillions which is "not accurately accounted for", has been remapped and has made it into republican coffers for elections?

With all the neoCons being turned into neoConvicts these days, I would not be surprised.

Any word on whether the FBI has subpoenaed the 'ballots' from that vote Boehner won?

Actually, what I read indicated the number of votes first cast tallied to the number of members, but all the members weren't there --- more votes than present members. Later they all showed up (dunno why they weren't there at the start) and the tally of that vote remained the same, but were cast differently.

Nice people, eh? Honor among thieves and all that...

Democracy Now! reported that Boehner actually went around handing out $500 checks from a tobacco company before the vote.

If the people in this country don't get off their collective butts & get involved in their government-- we are going to get more of the same & worse---which is why we are reaping the fruits of the best government money can buy now: the Royal Shaft.
The big mega-corporations that run this country WANT you to keep on whining & DO nothing. That's how they've managed to take over. They WANT you to think citizens can't change anything.
Stop being suckers.
Democracy is a verb.

It's awe-inspiring to think that a sleaze bucket like Boehner was actually chosen over Blunt (assuming the second-ballot vote was legitimate) to distance the party from the Abramoff scandals.

That has to mean that Blunt is in really, really deep.
Yet he's remaining as the #3 guy. It's almost beyond parody, really.

VotersUnite.org's Daily Voting News 'Daily Voting News'
For December 04, 2008

by John Gideon

The Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA) was signed into law in Oct. 2002. Amongst other things HAVA required the formation of the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and provided some mandates, in Title III of the law, for federal elections including some standards for voting systems. Those standards include, but are not limited to, accessibility for voters with disabilities and accuracy in the vote count. Testing by experts in accessibility has shown that none of the Direct Recording Electronic (DRE, usually touch-screen) voting systems presently in use meet the requirements for accessibility for disabled voters. Failures in testing and vote counting in real elections have also proven that, at times, the voting systems presently being used across the country do not meet the federally mandated requirements for accuracy.

So what guidance has been provided by the EAC to the states with regards to Title III? Well, actually none. In fact even though voting systems presently in use do not meet federal law the EAC is just now getting around to issuing guidance to state and local election officials and, according to the draft of the plan ‘featured’ below, it is going to take another two years before the EAC can complete the guidance.

Why can’t they just tell the vendors and the states that the law is clear and, if they fail to follow that law, violations will be referred to the DoJ? The fact that the vendors misrepresent their products as being accessible is a clear violation of the law. It is time they are held responsible and it doesn’t take two years of studying Title III of HAVA to make that clear....
