This just out minutes ago from Associated Press...

WASHINGTON --- Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said today.

Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney sprayed Whittington with shotgun pellets on Saturday at the Armstrong Ranch in South Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.

Armstrong said Cheney turned to shoot a bird and accidentally hit Whittington. She said Whittington was taken to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president was with Whittington, a lawyer from Austin, and his wife at the hospital this afternoon.

UPDATE FROM BRAD: Several sources (Fox, CNN, Reuters) confirming incident, but reporting it took place yesterday (Saturday) at 5:30pm Texas time. Why was the story withheld from the media until now? Almost 24 hours later? The man is reported to be in stable condition, apparently, at this time. Did they wait until they could report that he would be fine before releasing it at all? Would we have found out about it at all, therefore, if the man had died? Did they wait until after it was too late to be discussed discussed on the Sunday News shows?

Just some of the questions I expect we'll be hearing shortly.

FURTHER UPDATES...

Cheney on hunting...

I much prefer to catch wild fish or chase wild quail in South Texas...and perfectly happy to adjust as required.

And I also care a lot about gun laws. I worry sometimes that there is a growing antihunting sentiment that I run into with people...people who have no idea what it's all about...have never done it and don't like the idea of somebody else doing it.

On the Armstrongs, on whose ranch the incident occurred, and their relation to Cheney et al...From WhiteHouseForSale.org...

"We go out when the dew is still on the grass, and then hunt until we shoot our limit," Tobin said in 2000 of his ranch outings with Dick Cheney. "Then we pick a fine spot and have a wild game picnic lunch." True conservatives might choke on their javelina steaks if they knew that Tobin Armstrong dunned the government for $11,336 in farm subsidies between 1995 and 2002, according to the Environmental Working Group. Anne Armstrong served as: a close advisor to President Nixon; President Ford's British Ambassador; and approved covert actions on the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board under Reagan. A veteran of blue-chip corporate boards, Anne Armstrong was a Halliburton director when that corporation hired Cheney. She is Kay Bailey Hutchison's best friend...

Katherine Armstrong is the daughter of Anne, and was the one who witnessed the incident, quoted in the stories.

MORE... Shakespeare's Sister has details on Cheney's victim, Harry Whittington, and his long-standing crony-hood with Boy Bush...

DETAILS FROM HOSPITAL ON WHITTINGTON'S CONDITION... As Josh Marshall points out, details on Whittington's condition has so far only been reported by the property owner, Katharine Armstrong who has, by-and-large, downplayed the injury as no big deal.

CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital spokesperson, Yvonne Wheeler, tells The BRAD BLOG that the only information currently given to them by doctors is that Whittington is in "stable condition."

She's not able to say whether or not his condition has been worse previously when he was admitted to the facility at 8:15pm CT on Saturday, and then upgraded more recently.

News reports have said that Whittington was shot at 5:30pm CT, but Wheeler had no explanation for the apparent delay in his admission, other than she understands he was initially treated on-site. While the hospital is a two-hour drive from Armstrong's ranch, Whittington was transported to the facility by the hospital's own helicopter, so the reason for the apparent two-hour time-delay is still unclear.

No word yet on when Whittington may be released from the hospital.

Wheeler said that the media has requested a doctor there give a briefing on hunting accidents in general, and they will be doing so shortly.

We've so far been unable to receive comment from Cheney's office.

According to AP, Armstrong had said about the shooting:

"It broke the skin," she said of the shotgun pellets. "It knocked him silly. But he was fine. He was talking. His eyes were open. It didn't get in his eyes or anything like that."
...
"This is something that happens from time to time. You now, I've been peppered pretty well myself," said Armstrong.

THE LEFT COASTER POINTS OUT... That apparently it's all Whittington's own fault --- not Cheney's! --- that he got shot...At least according to Armstrong...

Whittington "came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong said.

"The vice president didn't see him," she continued. "The covey flushed and the vice president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by god, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good."

BRAD BLOG commenter Bonnie reports...

At 7:00pm [ET] tonight CNN's anchor was interviewing a doctor from the hospital the shooting victim was in. The anchor asked him how the patient was doing and the doctor stated that he was in the Trauma ICU but stable. The anchor was then so dumb as to ask if the patient would be able to go home tonight. The doctor repeated that he was in ICU. This guys wounds did more than break the skin.

JAMES AND SARAH BRADY RELEASE COMMENT... And a hilarious one at that...

WASHINGTON, Feb. 12 /U.S. Newswire/ --- James and Sarah Brady made comments today related to Vice President Cheney's reportedly accidental shooting yesterday in Texas.

"Now I understand why Dick Cheney keeps asking me to go hunting with him," said Jim Brady. "I had a friend once who accidentally shot pellets into his dog - and I thought he was an idiot."

"I've thought Cheney was scary for a long time," Sarah Brady said. "Now I know I was right to be nervous."

(Hat-tip Ron Brynaert!)

POLITICAL CORTEX summarizes nicely...

So, what we have is an event shrouded in secrecy for almost twenty-four hours which, when disclosed, was accompanied by a fawning statement by a Bush apparachik exonerating Cheney from any and all blame and/or liability.

Thus, this appears to be yet another example of the Bush Administration attempting to manipulate the press and perhaps hide the truth. What really happened on that ranch yesterday? Who the heck knows. What we do know is that, regardless of what actually happened, the Administration spin doctors immediately jumped in and crafted a story that put Cheney in the best possible light. And the "traditional media" reported that story without any skepticism whatsoever. Nevertheless, in light of the circumstances described above, this story from Ms. Armstrong is really no more credible than the stories we first heard from the Bushies about Jessica Lynch and Pat Tillman.

Looks like just another day for the Bush White House and the pliant media.

EDITOR & PUBLISHER is now asking... What the delay was in notifying the public, and would the public have been notified at all if Armstrong hadn't released the information to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. Apparently Bush, Card and Rove were informed on Saturday, as well, and didn't say a word and even the local police may not have been notified...

The Cheney spokesman [reporter Jaime] Powell spoke with, Lea Anne McBride, would not comment on whether the White House would have ever released the information had the Caller-Times not contacted them.

"I'm not going to speculate," McBride said, according to Powell. "When you put the call into me, I was able to confirm that account."
...
Francesco, at the Corpus Christi paper, said she felt it was a bit odd that her newsroom had not received any information about the shooting since "we often call law enforcement in area, even on weekends. We checked in and didn't hear anything about it."
...
Frank James, reporter in the Chicago Tribune's Washington bureau, put his how spin on it later in the day, asking, "How is it that Vice President Cheney can shoot a man, albeit accidentally, on Saturday during a hunting trip and the American public not be informed of it until today?"

Indeed, others raised questions as well. "There was no immediate reason given as to why the incident wasn't reported until Sunday," The Dallas Morning News observed. "The sheriff's office in Kenedy County did not respond to phone calls Sunday."
...
The president, who was at the White House over the weekend, was informed about the incident in Texas after it happened Saturday by Chief of Staff Andrew Card and Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove and was updated on Sunday, press secretary Scott McClellan said.

But neither the White House nor the vice president's staff announced the shooting.
...
"When a vice president of the U.S. shoots a man under any circumstance," [Chicago Tribune's Frank] James noted, "that is extremely relevant information. What might be the excuse to justify not immediately making the incident public?

THE THIRD HUNTER IS REVEALED... by Ron Brynaert over at RAW STORY. It seems the U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland, Pamela Willeford, another Bush Family crony, was also along for the festivities. The revelation by the Cox News Service, has yet to be picked up by any publication. As reported by RAW...

Pamela Willeford, a former Texas education official, accompanied Cheney and Whittington as they hunted quail at the Armstrong ranch in Texas on Saturday.
...
According to Open Secrets, "Willeford and her immediate family contributed a total of $23,200 to Republicans during the 2000, 2002 and 2004 election cycles, including $7,000 to the Bush campaigns and an additional $500 to the Bush-Cheney recount fund established after the 2000 election."

No explanation yet, for the lack of coverage of the Willeford story, despite a couple of lede grafs which seem to us to be too good not to print!...

Just before sunset Saturday, 78-year-old Harry Whittington pulled off "a double" --- bringing down two quails with two successive blasts from his shotgun.

One of Whittington's hunting companions, Vice President Dick Cheney, wasn't as accurate.

Good thing he wasn't admitted to the military all those many years ago. If he had he'd have been a better shot and the man would be dead.

See, there is a reason for everything.

Can you imagine the press response if a man had been shot by Al Gore during the Clinton administration? They would've had a field day. Wanna bet they downplay this incident?

I think Cheney is bucking for an early retirement. I'd only fear the possibility that George might replace him with J.E.B.

The doctors at the hospital said the victim would be much better off if cheney hadn't shot the man twice, skinned and field dressed him.

Today when cheney went to visit the victim cheney told the man it was a pure accident and that he was thinking about libby when he pulled the trigger - the victim told cheney "I'll get you - you bastard if it's the last thing I ever do" - to this cheney walked off and replied - "go f**k yourself"

This just in - it is reported that the lawyer who was shot had just handed cheney a bill for his services.

The hunter who was shot is a wealthy Austin lawyer who is currently fighting an eminent domain lawsuit against the city, which took his downtown land for a parking garage.

Harry Whittington has served as chair of the Texas Public Finance Authority Board and is a past member of the Texas Board of Corrections. In 2004, Governor Rick Perry appointed him chair of the Office of Patient Protection Executive Committee. Whittington also serves on the commission governing funeral homes in Texas. Close observers of Texas politics will remember that there was a big dustup about funeral homes and funeral giant SCI (headed by a Bush pioneer) while W was governor, but it appears Whittington came to the board just at the tail-end of that scandal.

It was the victim's fault for walking up on the Veep when the Veep was on a 2nd covey of quail and fixin' to shoot??!! When you're out hunting, you're not supposed to make any sounds, because you'll spook the game. Probably the victim would have been in more trouble than he is now, had he "announced" himself coming up on the Veep and scared the birds off prematurely. I think the Veep should hang up the guns--he evidently can no longer safely hunt, at his age and/or medical regimen.

Hey! The MSM was busting Kerry for taking photo-ops of a hunting trip, remember? I guess when a Republican f***ing SHOOTS someone, the MSM gives them a pass! When Kerry was being covered on TV during a campaing-time hunting trip, we were told by the MSM that it was blatant politicking and he wasn't a real hunter, remember? So, real hunters shoot humans???

Ah, MSM, give them another pass...again...

This is what the 24 hour coordinated MSM "hold" was on the story, Brad. Also, this proves the MSM is "controlled". NOT ONE came out with it before the other. There was a "coordinated hold"...

You should investigate how this works, and who exactly meets from the 6 Corporations and coordinates holding things like this. It's happening right now, it's fresh. SOME people from the 6 corporations got together to hold this for 24 hours. Who are they? Where were they? Was it via videoteleconferencing? All the MSM didn't just happen to hold this story for 24 hours. The scent is fresh, this didn't happen a couple of years ago, like some of the stories they hold.

The 24 hour hold was deciding how to present this on TV..not to just report it. And it had to cross their minds about the Kerry hunting trip during the campaign, and how they maligned him for it.

From AP Harry Whittington, a millionaire attorney from Austin, was in stable condition in the intensive care unit of a Corpus Christi hospital Sunday.

"He is stable and doing well. It was almost like he was spending time with me in my living room," said hospital administrator Peter Banko, who visited Whittington.

Banko said Whittington was in the intensive care unit because his condition warranted it, but he didn't elaborate.

God, I hate to see functionaries like Banko debase themselves for the likes of Cheney. What a f*cking comedy.

I'm reposting from what I said on http://www.crooksandliars.com since I'd like feedback on some of these questions:

Apparently Cheney thought he was hunting Dan Quail.

I'm amazed at how this is being covered by the press and even liberal
blogs:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/.../cheney_hunting_accident

Hm. A hot tempered man (Cheney) shoots a fellow GOP member who's a
vocal advocate for limited government power. Cheney has every reason to
be upset right now and is known to vent when he isn't happy (Mr. F***
You! on the senate floor). Cheney has a lot of reasons right now to be
unhappy.

So there was a shooting, and the media delays 24 hours and then reports
that it was an accident. Who claimed it was an accident? Cheney?

If you do the geometry, how the heck did Harry Whittington get peppered
in the chest, neck and head? The birds were supposed to be in flight.
I'd expect that he might get hit in the head but not in his chest, (yes
I'm aware of how bird guns scatter). It's possible but it seems a bit
odd.

Does anyone know who the district attorney and prosecutor are for where
Cheney did this shooting? I'm wondering if there will be an
investigation, certainly this warrants one. Even if the victim decides
not to prosecute, an investigation should happen since Cheney is such a
powerful man the victim would naturally feel intimidated. Not to
mention that a shooting was involved.

The blog-sphere needs to identify who the DA and prosecutor are and
contact them to let them know they will be held accountable.

It also makes no sense to blame the victim for this. I've never heard
it said you should interrupt a hunter's shot by "signaling" them when
you are behind the line a fire. It was Cheney's responsibility to know
where the rest of the party was before pulling the trigger. I'm also
surprised that reports say he's alert and responsive but underplay that
he's in "stable", not "good" condition at the hospital.

It seems that Cheney is bulletproof.

Where's all the Kennedy/Chappaquidick bashers for the 24 hour delay in Kennedy reporting the Kopechne accident? Ricky???

Not that I'm condoning Kennedy's actions. But, I'm looking for a little consistency from all these hypocrites. I'm expecting Rush Limbaugh to go on the air tomorrow, and question the 24 hour delay, like he's been doing to Kennedy for years!!!!!!

Quail don't like to fly. They prefer to walk, usually only fly short distances. They like to keep to low, dense brush. They are very easy to spook... like, uh, blink... in a split second, dozens of them will bolt from cover. Their trajectory is low because their cover is low, and they are ground-hugging birds. It's very startling when they do this. You go from silence to a great flapping and squawking in a heartbeat.

It's VERY fast, and the quail are GONE but now.

Beside the facts that the story of the Vice President’s hunting accident was held for 24 hours, was not released by the White House but by the property owner, and not to the major media but to the local Corpus Christi paper, one other thing strikes me as a bit odd.

The AP account of what occurred indicates that Cheney's accidental shooting victim was behind him.

Depending on where the quail supposedly flushed from, Vice President Cheney had to have rapidly rotated his position between 90-180 degrees or more in order to shoot someone who was behind him.

There is something a little "Rosemary Woods-ish" about this contortionistic account of the accident. Granted, I am not a hunter. But who shoots at a target that emerges from behind their position, or tracks a target moving in that direction?

Where were the Secret Service Agents standing? Presumably behind VP Cheney as well? Were they close enough to have been hit? Did they file a report? Can we see it?

I strongly suspect that an accidental discharge of Cheney's gun occurred, but that it happened in some other way than has been reported.

Thus the 24 hr delay in reporting the story...time enough to manufacture a version of events and get everyone on the same page to repeat it.

I look forward to reading the transcripts of tomorrow’s gaggle and press briefing. They should be a real hoot!

We need another article on Eminent Domain and what it means. Particularly since that is what is happening to the Katrina victims. On a site CONSERVATIVE WITHOUT THE PREFIXES the guy wrote shortly after the Katrina tragedy that he has always believed and the law states that you own property even if it is made of matchsticks and under 8 feet of water.

The fact that Eminent Domain was passed by the Supreme Court just months before the Katrina levees broke AFTER THE HURRICANE HAD PASSED New Orleans is something that needs to be stressed and reporting on what is happening to the property of those who are in campsites without FEMA aid or in FEMA Detention Camps under ARMED MILITARY GUARD and the more than 3,000 people in NOLA at the time of Katrina who are still missing without a trace and the same corrupt funeral firm in Gov. GW Bush's Funeralgate who had since been prosecuted for covering up more bodies was hired to dispose of the Katrina victims of this Bush mass murderer and the mention of "Crematoriums"(???!!) by this funeral firm in NOLA after charging to microchip the bodies was never explained either in MSM or liberal blogs.

Don't let this story die like the people of NOLA without any information esp. since the millionnaire attorney who was shot by Cheney was having success in challenging Eminent Domain.

The quail could have been in the brush in front of him, and by the time he could get a shot off in their general direction, which is all you can hope for with quail, he easily could have been turned all the way around. That's why he was using a shot gun. You can't draw a bead on a single bird, in almost all situations, before it's disappeared again.

Eminent Domain has been around forever. The Supremes recently held that forcing property owners to sell so that, say, a shopping mall could be built, constituted public use. It's historically been used for appropriating property for building freeways. Some places have preserved their forestlands by this method. It's brand new that developers can force you out of your home.

Here in the sticks of Idaho where I grew up we started "brushing" qual and deer at age six or seven, and carrying a rifle or shotgun by twelve or thirteen. I can say with all honesty hunting accidents like this are rare. And it is always the responsibility of the shooter to know what he is targeting, and if there is any risk involved. This is extreme negligence on Dicks part to say the least. This kind of mishap happening here would brand a man for life. That man would always be known as the town idiot, and needless to say he would always hunt alone from that day forward.

To think that this man cannot be trusted to hunt with, but he can somehow be trusted with sending men into battle is frightening indeed.

This article reports that the victim was shot from 30 yards away. That's an interesting distance to be hit by a man firing into the air at a bird.

Houston Chronicle web site has interesting article. Armstrong says Whittington was "mostly bruised." But the article mentions after he was initially treated by the medical staff with Cheney he was taken to a hospital in Kingsville, TX and then airlilfted to hosptial in Corpus Christi. (That explains the delay in getting to the Corpus hospital that was mentioned earlier) All this for "mostly bruises?" I understand the hospital in Corpus he went to is the county/public type that has a lot of experience in gunshots wounds.

The article also mentions what seems to be a discrepency between Cheney and the quail being 30 yards away or 100 yards away. www.houstonchronicle.com for more info

I don't know that much about guns, but it seems to me it would be hard to put someone 30 yards away into intensive care with a shotgun. Maybe he had a heart attack from getting sprayed with shot? There isn't anything weird about the height of the shot. Quail rarely fly very high, and rarely fly far. It is a brilliantly fast burst from one place to another. Dense underbrush is their milieu. They like to nest in slash piles. You have to be careful not to burn up their nests in the spring.

It seems to me the victim had to be closer than 30 yards, maybe 30 feet and Cheney had pulled the trigger while pivoting before he noticed his friend coming into the range of the shot burst.

Or. Vice-Fuhrer just got pissed off at his uppity friend.
